INT. RAMONA'S DORM ROOM – NIGHT
Ramona is typing away on her laptop. Her stack of academic readings has visibly shrunken. Without taking her eyes off the screen, she reaches for her jug and takes a sip.
CUT TO:
INT. RAMONA'S DORM ROOM – DAY
Ramona is sleeping at her desk. When her alarm beeps, she gets up and rushes out the room.
CUT TO:
INT. CLASSROOM – DAY
Ramona is writing the script on her laptop while in class. Across her, at the head of the circle, sits her professor.
PROFESSOR: Can anyone tell me what they thought? Ramona?
Ramona looks up.
RAMONA: Sir?
PROFESSOR: We're talking about Metaphors by Sylvia Plath. What did you think of it?
Ramona adjusts in her seat.
RAMONA: Oh.
The girls across her snicker again. Ramona is undeterred.
RAMONA: Well, I could be wrong, but to me it seemed like the persona—in this case, a woman—is poking fun at her pregnancy, while at the same time is expressing her anxiety about her state.
She pauses to pull out her copy. The professor lifts his eyebrow.
RAMONA: "I'm a means, a stage, a cow in calf." She doesn't even hint at feeling like her worth is entirely predicated upon her ability to produce an offspring. And in the last line—"Boarded the train there's no getting off," the persona—to me, at least—acknowledges that she, a mother-to-be, is irrevocably and forever changed by the experience.
The class is silent.
PROFESSOR: Very well put, Ramona.
Ramona smiles.
