CUT TO:
INT. RAMONA'S DORM ROOM – DAY
Ramona wakes up groggily. She rubs her eyes and stares up at her ceiling. She turns over to her side, facing the window. She bites her lip.
CUT TO:
INT. CLASSROOM – DAY
Ramona's professor drops her new graded fiction piece on her desk. Scribbled in red ink is B+ and a note: 'Keep up the good work.' Ramona smiles to herself.
CUT TO:
EXT. COLLEGE CAMPUS – DAY
Ramona is walking to her next class. While doing so, she is scrolling through her phone, going through her photos with Simon, especially ones from last night. There is one of her with Simon and his friends, a selfie of her and Simon where she's red-faced from how intoxicated she was. She smiles to herself.
CUT TO:
INT. SALLY'S SANDWICH SHOP – DAY
Ramona enters the shop. Haley looks up from the cashier.
RAMONA: Hey, is Simon in the kitchen?
Haley nods.
HALEY: Same place as always.
Ramona leans over the counter to peer through the window.
RAMONA: Hey, Simon.
Simon glances back at her.
SIMON: Hi.
RAMONA: Can we talk?
SIMON: Uh, sure. But I gotta finish this first.
Ramona nods. After some time, Simon carries a plate of burger and fries over and taps the bell on the counter to let Haley know the order was ready. Ramona hands the plate to Haley, who serves it to the waiting customer.
RAMONA: They really need to hire another cook.
HALEY: Tell me about it.
SIMON: It's okay. We don't get that much orders anyway.
HALEY: Still. You're overworked. Don't you think, Mones?
Ramona looks at Simon.
RAMONA: I think he'd benefit from a little more rest, yeah.
Simon chuckles.
SIMON: (to Ramona) What do you want to talk about?
RAMONA: Oh. Um—
Ramona looks at Haley. Haley waves them off dismissively.
HALEY: Go ahead. I doubt anyone will be coming so soon anyway.
Simon gets up and gestures for Ramona to follow him out the backdoor.
CUT TO:
EXT. BACK ALLEY – DAY
Simon walks out of the kitchen door and Ramona follows. He points to the bench on the sidewalk and they go to sit on opposite ends. She turns to look at him.
RAMONA: I'm almost done with the script.
SIMON: Yeah?
He smiles.
SIMON: That's good.
Ramona is quiet. She toys with her fingers.
RAMONA: About last night.
Simon bites his lip.
RAMONA: Thanks for—um—yeah. Taking care of me. And not... taking advantage.
SIMON: I would never.
RAMONA: No, I know. But still. Thank you.
Simon nods, his gaze glued to his hands on his lap.
SIMON: You're welcome.
Ramona looks at him.
RAMONA: I wasn't so drunk that I didn't know what was going on, by the way.
Simon looks at her.
RAMONA: I–I meant what I said. About how I couldn't stop thinking about you after what you said. (pause) I don't know why I wanted to talk, really. I guess—just—thanks. For last night. I had fun.
Simon bows his head.
SIMON: (softly) You're welcome.
He exhales loudly and gets up.
SIMON: I should get back to work.
RAMONA: Oh, yeah. Right, yeah.
She gets up and watches him hesitate. Then he turns and starts walking back to the shop.
RAMONA: Simon?
He stops and turns.
SIMON: Yeah?
RAMONA: I care about you, too. A lot.
Simon blinks. He offers her a nod and heads back inside. Defeated and confused, Ramona slumps back down on her seat and stares at the passing cars.
