12| the orphan

under onyx skies and pearly clouds
she lived, unknown to most
with parents in heaven, and a home
whose door had long since closed
an undiscovered gem, a diamond
in the rough, in this mortal land
the only thing she owned was her ruby heart
until one fateful day, a handsome lad
gave her his hand and promised her his heart

time flew past, and before she knew
she'd given up the only thing she'd  owned
he said he'd travel north and will return
with riches, to build their own home
she bid him farewell and resolved to endure
this longing for her heart to come home

but years travelled by, with no return
of the man who'd left her alone
rumours had it that, in the northen lands
he'd been enchanted by a maiden's wealth
and now in those lands, he'd settled down
in her throne of gold, he dwelt
the orphan paid no heed, refused to believe
and waited for him to come
one day,  she thought,  she'd be in his arms
one day soon, they'd be one

many years later, the man came to see
that gold wouldn't always shine
he rode back south, heart heavy with guilt
hoping the lovely orphan was living fine
after all these years,  he realised
her ruby heart she'd given him still glowed
with love and hope that he'd return
from his golden throne
with love and hope she was waiting still
in her grave of stone.
