Chapter Three
"We're going on a trip." Niall said, now lit by the glow of his phone.
I looked around. We were in an aeroplane.
"Where are we going?" I asked. "What time is it?"
"You ask a lot of questions." Niall laughed.
"Niall, this isn't funny, where are we going? Why don't I remember the airport?"
"It was the only way I was going to get you on this plane."
"The juice." I paused. "You drugged me?!"
"I'm sorry, Ayley, hey, calm down."
"No, Niall, I can't believe you drugged me!"
"I can't believe you're flipping shit on me and you don't even know where we're going!"
"Well I don't know where we're going because you won't tell me where we're going!"
"I won't tell you where we're going because it's a surprise!"
"Why does everything have to be a surprise?!"
"Because it's your birthday!" He yelled louder than I'd ever heard him yell.
I stopped.
Everyone who was awake was staring at us. Whatever my friends were doing, wherever we were going, it was for my birthday. I broke down in tears.
"Hey, come here, I'm sorry." Niall hugged me.
"I'm sorry for yelling." I wept.
"I'm sorry too."
I cried on his shoulder.
"The good news is we're here."
I looked at him with wide eyes and turned my head to the window.
"Ah ah ah!" Niall said.
"No!" I said when I saw he was holding the blindfold.
"Come on, it's gotta be a surprise."
I didn't want to wear the blindfold. It was itchy and very uncomfortable and it just made me feel plain awkward. I reluctantly grabbed it out of his hand and he tied it at the back of my head.
"I'll lead you out."
"I know you. You're gonna run me into something."
He laughed. "I promise I won't"
"Fine."
"I don't want to hurt the baby."
"Oh I see how it is, you'd run me into something if I wasn't pregnant?"
"Well yea."
We laughed.
"Ladies and gentlemen we have now arrived. Thank you for flying with Air Canada and we hope you enjoy your time here."
"Why didn't she say where we are?"
"Because I told her not to because it's a surprise for you."
I laughed. "Nice."
"Kay hold my hand."
I grabbed his hand and he wrapped his other arm around my back, grabbing onto my left shoulder. He led me out of the plane and down a staircase onto what felt like tarmac. It was cool. I could feel mist on my body. I could tell I was outside.
"Sup?" Jess' voice said.
"Jess! Where are we?!" I said.
"Wouldn't you like to know." She mocked.
"Yes please!"
"Too bad." I could hear the smirk on her face.
I groaned as they led me into what felt like an air-conditioned building. I had absolutely no idea where we were. I had fallen asleep (or knocked unconscious via unknown drugs I had been given) on the ride there so I didn't know how many hours we had been in the plane. People just started ignoring me when I asked where we were so I gave up asking. All I knew was that we had driven to what I now assumed was the airport in Toronto and flown to some unknown destination, but it was cool. Maybe we were in Asia. Or England. Or Pacific Canada. I had no idea how long I was unconscious for so I had no idea how far away from home we were. I knew Niall and Jess and the rest of my friends and my sister were with me. I hadn't heard my mum's voice since we'd left home.
"Where's my mum?" I asked.
They were still leading me through hallways and up stairs.
"She's at home." Jess said.
"Why isn't she here?"
"She didn't want to come."
"Where is here?"
"Ayley. I'm not going to tell you where we are. Stop asking."
"Fine." I paused. "Will you at least answer one question?"
"Depends on what it is."
"Have I ever been here before?" I asked.
If she said no, I could eliminate England, Italy, Austria, Germany, Jamaica, Québec the Eastern states, and Florida. If she said yes, I could narrow it down to all those places.
"I don't know, should we tell her that, Niall?" Jess said.
"I dunno, Desso. That's kind of a big hint." Niall replied.
"I'm not gonna tell you." Jess said.
"Are we between the tropics?" I asked.
"The what now?" Niall said.
"I mean between like, the middle of Mexico and the northern Australia."
They were quiet.
"Like, all the way around." I stirred the air with my finger, trying to trace the latitudinal lines around the world.
"Should we say?" Niall asked.
"I think we can answer that one."
"No, we are not between the tropics."
"What time is it?" I asked.
"Uhh 4:00pm." Niall said.
"I mean at home."
"Oh, uh 11:00am."
"We're in Europe." I smiled.
They were quiet.
"I'm guessing England?"
Still, they didn't say a word.
"Are we?" I asked.
