The second day in rehab was worse than the first. Lauren woke up shaking and sick to her stomach. Lights hurt her eyes. The shakes felt all too familiar to Lauren, the detox from the cocaine had started. For Lauren, the stomach pains were the worst, the shakes she could live with. The pain in her stomach reminded her of the rape and abortion from a few months ago. The mental pain that came with it made Lauren want to take more drugs, or at least drink.
As a routine one of the nurses woke the patients up every morning at 7. When the attending nurse didn't find Lauren in her bed she walked to the bathroom. There she found Lauren collapsed on the cold tile floor, half leaning against the wall, her arm on the toilet.
"O dear, are you okay?" The nurse asked.
Lauren couldn't speak, the shakes had taken over and her throat hurt from vomiting.
"Come on, let's get you up." The nurse helped Lauren sit up before going to find the doctor.
"Lauren? Lauren! Can you open your eyes for me?" The voice of another doctor than the day before said. "I need to see those blues to see what I can do for you." He said. His voice was friendly.
Lauren had difficulty opening her eyes. The shakes were painful and opening her eyes hurt because of the lights. The doctor only needed a second before he spoke to the nurse.
"Okay. So. This is what we're going to do. I can't give her any pain relief but we can make her comfortable. Let's get her into bed and get ice. Also call the physical therapist, he can apply pressure or massage to make the shakes less painful."
"Will do, doc." The nurse spoke.
Lauren was put back in bed with an ice pack on her head for the headache and a bucket next to her bed for when she needed to throw up. The doctor had called the physical therapist who came fast. The nurse stayed in the room the entire time. At first the feeling of pressure and massage of the muscle felt nice and gave Lauren some time to rest, but eventually it made her feel worse.
"Cold" she stammered.
"I'll get you a blanket." The nurse said.
"No. No. Water."
"I'll get some more ice."
At three p.m. the nurse thought the worst part of the detox was over because Lauren had fallen asleep and left the room. Lauren on the other hand felt there was more pain on its way out. She was just too tired to fight at this point."Hi, I'm Steven. I'm here to see Lauren." Steven said to the receptionist.
"Let me just check the list." The receptionist smiled. "Ah, here you are. If you could just wait for a moment. The doctor would like to talk to you before you go and visit."After Steven had talked to the doctor he walked to Lauren her room. He saw her shaking and a man massaging her back.
"Hi, baby." Steven said and sat down on the bed next to Lauren.
She could barely talk. The pain of the shakes were excruciating. "Don't... leave... me... i... think... I'm ... going ... to... die.'' Lauren shivered.
"No, you're not going to die. You'll get through this. I'm here now. I'm not going anywhere."
"I... don't... think... I... can... do... this... not... again."
"O, darling. You can. And if you feel you can't do it, I'll be here to save you and get you through." Steven said and he kissed her head before Lauren fell asleep
"What the fuck is going on here!"
"Ssshh. Don't yell. I finally got her to sleep." Steven said to the man that had entered the room.
"O My God! You're Steven Tyler!"
"And you are?" Steven whispered as he got up from the bed and took the man outside.
"I'm Richard. I'm a friend of Lauren."
"Nice to meet you." Steven said. "What do you want from Lauren?"
"Is she okay? I missed her in group today."
"She'll be okay. She's very fragile at this point. This is though on her."
"So, what brings you here?" Richard asked
"Well, I'm the one that brought her here. I've been there for the last few months."
"Fucking hell. You two are dating?"
"None of your business." Steven said. "Now, if you don't mind, I need to get back to Lauren."Steven sat back down. The movement made Lauren wake up. She was still shaking but it was less violent. "Hey there." Steven smiled.
"Hi." Lauren said, her voice was soft.
"How are you feeling?"
"Sore. Tired. Thirsty."
"Do you want me to get you a drink?"
"Can we go together?"
"Let's go."Dressed in sweats Lauren got up. As she was still trembling a bit it, so took her quite a lot of time to get to the cafeteria. Steven and Lauren sat down on a couch near the window. Lauren curled up against Steven, her head on his chest. He wrapped one arm around her and stroked Laurens soft hair with the other. The duo sat like this until Lauren fell asleep again.
