Running field is the safest place during my freshmen days. No bullies, no teacher staring at you and no hissing if you make an inappropriate noise. You can be who you are and sing as loud as you want. No rules and no limits. You can act crazy and be weird. And most of all, that entire field feels like home because of your friends. Like every ring of the first break, you are excited to see the field and laugh once again. But there is another place where we feel we are safe. The Coffee Latte Shop.
After the sports fest, Romiel is talking a lot about this place he wanted to visit. So we decided to ask Mr. McGrath, Ms. Cancer's father if she is allowed to go with us. Fortunately, he let her go and luckily Renz has a car where we can go to that cafe without spending money. Renz car is a blue Audi RS2 Avant with a very old interior with navy blue seats and a cassette player with just 1 tape inside his compartment. Loise told us Renz always plays it when they are on the road. 1984 David Bowie playlist, which is the perfect music for this kind of travel. The car's window is open and we let the air enter. I am seated at the middle of Romiel and Ms. Cancer. She is next to the window on the right side of the car. I can smell her scent and it is like a fresh muffin and a flowery garden. Her eyes are brown and starry that I can't get enough from staring at it. Her lips are really red that she don't even need a lipstick to put on. She is really beautiful even at her condition.
"What?" She asked. I guess she notices that I've been staring her the whole time.
"Nothing," I smirked "You-uhm-you smell nice."
"Thank you." She smiled. I wish that day I could just stop the time and spend my whole day with her. I am not sure what am I feeling that day. But something is certain; I wanted to see her every single day.
The coffee latte shop is about 30 minutes' drive away from our school. After class, we always make sure to meet at the shop. Ms. Cancer and I sometimes go there together with the help of Mr. McGrath. He picks us up and drove us to the coffee shop. Mr. McGrath is a nice guy and also a funny one because every time I'm with them. He always has a new joke to share. Ms. Cancer dislikes some of his jokes but I guess that is normal if those jokes are about the two of us.
"Hi dad," Ms. Cancer said while his father carries her into the car.
"Hello. Mr. McGrath." I said then he smiled at me and took Ms. Cancer's bag from my hand.
"Thank you." He said, "So where you two lovebirds headed."
"DAD!" Ms. Cancer shouted and her face turned red as well as mine.
"The usual place sir," I said changing the mood and I enter the car seated next to Ms. Cancer's wheelchair.
Going at the Coffee Latte Shop became a usual thing to us. We order different drinks every time we visit the place because we wanted to try it all. We also visit the shop when one of us has a stressful day. We always had each other's back. We know everyone's secret and everyone's need. We make sure to give time and make a way to see each. It is like we are invincible when we are together. We thought this friendship will never end. But then every beautiful story has its ending.
We still visit the coffee shop and still hang at the field but when we step up to the next level of high school life, sophomore year, slowly everyone is changing. Slowly the bonds are fading. Ms. Cancer and I are always together with Romiel but unfortunately, Hanna went to the other country because of her father's job. Renz and Loise are still together but Loise loses her scholarship because of the video that came out. Carl's friend spread the video and it worsens everything. Loise went to a different school because of it. And Renz loses his way to the league. That is the start of a tragic story.
I once saw the video during freshmen days. Renz showed it to me and he told me everything about it. It is him and Loise at the computer lab kissing intimately. Then he told me that they forgot to lock the room so someone sneaks out and took a video. And we all thought that the issue is over because Carl the leader of all bullies finally graduated but I guess he is not done yet, he is not yet satisfied.
Before the rumors spread, the six of us meet at the Coffee Latte Shop for Hanna's farewell party. We all talk about Carl and how happy we are that we are finally safe from the bullies. But then on the first day of the sophomore year, as we enter the hall, whispers are everywhere. Judgmental looks are staring at us and laughter and murmuring are all around. That is when it all falls down. The field started to be just like an ordinary field. Renz and Loise started to fight. Then two weeks after Loise went to a different school. Renz got into a fight with Carl and with the other college students that made him lose his college scholarship and his last chance to play at the sports league. The Coffee Latte Shop started to feel empty also when Romiel started to avoid us and Loise stop seeing us. The three of us still tries to make everything lighter and still make sure to go to our favorite hang outs. But then tragic came. Renz stops going to school when Loise kills herself.
"Hey," Parisa said still holding me so tight. "I'm sorry too."
"Sorry for what?" I said confused.
"For leaving you that day," she exhaled and breathes really deep "for not answering your question."
