Sophie Elizabeth Foster woke up as her alarm started ringing. She swatted blindly at her alarm clock, trying to turn it off. The clock fell down to the ground with a thud, still ringing. Sophie groaned and got out of her bed to turn it off.
She rubbed her eyes sleepily. She fell back into the bed, trying to steal a few extra minutes.
"Sophie! Are you awake? First day of school!" Edaline, Sophie's mom, yelled.
"Ughhhh." Sophie slowly dragged herself into the bathroom and brushed her teeth. She got changed into a t-shirt and some shorts and walked downstairs.
"You excited Sophie?" Edaline asked, her voice gentler than usual. Sophie shrugged. Edaline smiled sympathetically and poured out some cereal for her.
"It's fine mom, I can do it myself," Sophie said.
"If you insist."
Sophie slowly poured out the cereal and the milk. She sighed. She was kind of really nervous. Today was her first day at a new high school. She had moved because her parents said this school was going to be better for her. She knew what that meant. It meant she might have friends.
Sophie liked to keep a low profile at school. She always wore dark clothes and never spoke unless she had to. Attention never meant anything good. And she had no friends.
But was this school a change for the better?
. . .
Sophie walked her way through the students gathering at the school's courtyard. Everyone else was meeting with friends and talking about their summer. Sophie just stood there awkwardly, hoping the bell would ring soon. Being alone never got easier. She pulled out an eyelash nervously. She fiddled with her thumbs, trying to the resist the temptation of pulling out another eyelash.
"Hi there, you must be the new student here," a voice with a crisp accent greeted her. Sophie looked up and found herself looking at a boy with dark brown hair and rather unusual teal eyes. He seemed a few years older than her, and was by far the cutest boy she had ever seen.
"H-hi," Sophie stammered. He grinned a smile that belonged on the movie screen. Her heart fluttered without her permission. Come on Sophie. Since when did you become like one of those silly girls? Sophie thought to herself.
"My name's Fitz," Fitz introduced, offering her a hand to shake. Sophie took it, willing for her hand not to sweat.
"Oh uh, Sophie," Sophie replied. Fitz smiled and Sophie's heart fluttered again.
At that moment, the bell rung.
"Come on, let me show you around!" Fitz invited. Sophie hesitated for a moment, then followed him inside.
Maybe this school year wasn't going to be that bad after all.
