"So we have a new student, Sophie Foster," Lady Galvin hissed, staring straight at Sophie. Marella shot her a sympathetic look and Sophie tried to disappear, once again.
"Let's hope you'll actually be a good student," Lady Galvin said. Sophie gulped so loud, she was sure everyone in the room heard her. Sophie was never that good at Science.
"Today we are dissecting a frog. You do not have biology so we're going to include everything this year," Lady Galvin said, grinning maliciously. The whole class groaned loudly. "No complaining! I don't have high expectations for the lot of you, but I expect everyone to do well this class. Understood?" The class nodded hesitantly.
"One person from each table please go up to the front and grab a pan," Lady Galvin instructed. Marella rose from her seat and grabbed a pan from the front.
"Another person grab one of each tool," the person across from Sophie stood up and went to the front. "And the last person," Lady Galvin paused, and smiled, her eyes on Sophie, "Can go and get the frog." Sophie shuddered and stood up, grabbing a jar with a dead frog inside. She wrinkled her nose, and couldn't help but glance at the jar. The frog was dead. Definitely dead. Sophie gagged and looked away. A great start to the great year.
"Once all the materials are set, please begin!" Lady Galvin announced, before sitting down at her desk.
"What are we supposed to do with these things?" Marella asked, frowning. She picked up a tool that looked like a small X-Acto knife.
"Dissect it, obviously," The person across from Sophie answered, rolling her eyes. Sophie thought she looked quite familiar and studied her closely. She had bright teal eyes and curly brown hair. Sophie stifled a gasp. Biana Vacker!
"Are you alright, Sophie? You look really startled," Biana said, looking at Sophie in concern.
"Um, it's nothing," Sophie answered, smiling. Biana smiled back.
"Well, let's begin," Marella suggested, sticking the knife right into the frog. Nothing happened.
"Was something supposed to happen?" Biana asked, using a tool to poke the frog.
"The frog's dead, Biana," Marella said.
"Maybe we have to slice it open," Sophie prompted, grabbing the end of the knife and making a long slit.
"Let's see what you have to offer to our school, Sophie Foster," Sophie jumped and didn't dare move. "Hmm. Not bad, I presume," Lady Galvin growled, stalking away to another table.
"Sophie! You saved us from detention!" Marella whooped. Biana grinned.
"And in Lady Galvin's class! It's a miracle!" Biana said. Sophie smiled shyly.
"Ladies! Inside voices! You three will be having detention during lunch today!" Lady Galvin barked. The three of them seemed to wilt back into their seats.
"Sorry Sophie, this wasn't your fault," Biana whispered across the table.
"It's alright," Sophie replied, sighing. Detention on the first day. Wonderful.
----------
"Hey Biana, are you sitting with us during lunch today?" a dark skinned girl with turquoise eyes approached Biana, shooting a glance at Sophie and Marella. A blue streak ran through her dark hair, and her eyes pierced through Sophie.
"Sorry, Maruca, I gotta go to detention," Biana shrugged.
"Oh, alright then, catch you later," Maruca walked away. Sophie followed Biana and Marella through the long corridors and empty classrooms.
"This school is a lot bigger than it looks," Sophie commented, looking around.
"That's for sure," Marella nodded.
"We're here!" Biana said, pushing open a door to reveal a classroom with several students seated already.
"Biana! First day and already in detention?" the same blonde haired boy from this morning sat in a seat, looking perfectly comfortable. Biana rolled her eyes.
"It's my first time on the first day. I don't think I could say the same about you though, Keefe," Biana snorted. Keefe smirked and twirled a pen in his hand. Sophie watched it spin until it fell on the ground.
"You're right about that," Keefe agreed, grinning. "So you're the new kid Fitz was showing around." Sophie nodded.
"She has name you know," Marella said, crossing her arms. Keefe put his hands in the air.
"Woah woah, I don't even know her name yet!" Keefe protested.
"I'm Sophie," Sophie piped up.
"Keefe," Keefe said. "Nice to meet you." He smirked and went back to twirling his pen around his fingers.
"Does he smirk a lot?" Sophie asked. Biana and Marella nodded vigourously.
"He'll smirk right before he dies," Biana retorted. Sophie smiled.
"Hey, what you guys smiling about? I can tell when someone is talking about me!" Keefe yelled from the other side of the room.
"Totally," Biana replied, smiling at Keefe.
"A prank's coming your way. You better watch out," Keefe said, winking.
