Two months later...
"See you later!" Biana called, waving at Sophie. Sophie smiled and waved back. She hopped on her bike and rode home.
"Hi Mom, I need to get going to Biana's house," Sophie said quickly, stuffing a donut in her mouth and grabbing another and putting it in a container.
Edaline suddenly embraced her.
"I'm so glad you changed schools, Sophie," Edaline choked out. Sophie blinked and held back some tears. Why was she crying?
"Um, thanks mom," Sophie mumbled through her donut. "Gotta go!" Sophie grabbed her donuts and sped off to the Vacker's.
. . .
"Hey Foster! We're playing base quest!" Keefe yelled. Sophie dropped her container and quickly finished her donut.
"Ok! I'm coming!" Sophie yelled back. She ran down the hill but ended up tripping on her foot.
"Oof," Sophie grumbled. Why was she so clumsy? She got up and walked towards them.
"I call Foster's team!" Keefe declared. Biana glared at him.
"You can't have Sophie on your team every time! I get Sophie this time!" Biana muttered. Sophie smiled, embarrassed.
"I haven't had Sophie on my team, yet," Fitz pointed out.
"Nah, doesn't matter. Team Foster-Keefe FOR THE WIN!" Keefe yelled. Fitz smiled and elbowed Keefe.
"Alright fine. Fitz can have Sophie on his team for this round, but next game I am on Sophie's team!" Biana added. Fitz nodded. "Keefe?"
"Fine, fine, fine," Keefe grumbled. He shot a wink at Sophie. Sophie grinned back.
"Well, Sophie and I are going to set up our base," Fitz said, shooting a look at Keefe. He ran off into the woods and Sophie followed.
"What about this tree?" Sophie suggested, pointing at a stout looking tree. Fitz looked it over.
"Well, your team wins every time, I trust you," Fitz agreed, smiling at Sophie. Sophie heard her heart pounding so loud that she swore the ground was shaking.
. . .
"That was a good game," Fitz grinned. Biana huffed.
"That's because Sophie was on your team. But next time, Sophie and I are going to whack your sorry butts!" Biana smirked, catching Sophie's eye. Sophie couldn't help but grin back.
"How exactly are you so good at this Foster? Have you played base quest before?" Keefe asked. Sophie shook her head and was just about to answer when they heard a loud noise from the Vacker mansion. Fitz started sprinting and the rest followed.
As they got closer, they started to hear muffled voices.
"Wow. This place is amazing!"
"There isn't time to gawk, Linh!"
"What are you doing here?" Fitz shouted. Both figures froze. There seemed to be a boy and a girl, both around their age. They were wearing a mask over their face. Sophie noticed that they both had striking silvery blue eyes, and black hair with silver tips. Sophie squinted at the girl. She was sure she had seen her around before.
Then they both bolted. The boy was amazingly fast, and he seemed to disappear into the shadows. The girl on the other hand, was fast, but not as fast as Fitz. Sophie gave her legs a burst of energy and ran as fast as she could. She grabbed the boy's arm, and he fell.
"Umph!" Sophie fell face first into the grass.
"Let go of me!" the boy growled. Just then, the others arrived. They had unmasked the girl, and Sophie recognized her. She was the girl that Ms.Brooke thought was her!
"Hey you're in my class!" Biana said. The girl winced.
"Crap," the girl said quietly.
"Let go of my sister!" the boy growled.
"Take off your mask then!" Keefe said.
"If you let her go first."
"Alright," Fitz replied, letting go of the girl's arm. The boy hesitated, then reached up to pull the mask off. His resemblance to his sister was striking.
"Who are you?" Sophie whispered. He looked straight at her, his eyes piercing, and his mouth in a scowl.
"My name is Tam Song."
