Rapunzel smiled warmly at the nice woman walking alongside her.
She had bumped into this woman, named Mara, at the town's library.

The rough hard ground they walked upon had no grass, not for a long time.

They made small talk as they strolled around the dried up fountain, making remarks about the odd weather.

The sun was mostly hidden behind dark grey clouds, promising rain, but not releasing any in years. So that's what the townsfolk have muttered about.
Static buzzed in Rapunzel's ear, as if the atmosphere itself was waiting for something.

Mara was speaking about one of her past parties, saying how green the trees used to be before the drought.
"Luscious leaves and fat apples used to dangle from this tree," she explained, her minds eye in the past.
"But that was before-" she cut herself off, fear erupting in her eyes.

"Before what?" Rapunzel asked, twirling a strand of her hair, pretending to not be concerned with whatever may have happened.

Mara looked over both of her shoulders and pushed her into a dark alley.

"You mustn't repeat this to anyone! Or that I told you!!" She whimpered harshly.

Rapunzel nodded, a little shaken at her sudden behavior. Ever since she had met anyone in this town, they all seemed to lack any emotion.

"It was before HE came."

"Who is He?" Rapunzel wondered aloud, her heart picking up pace as she was finally getting somewhere in the long five weeks of nothingness that they've found.

"Death."
