KYLO REN SAT BESIDE GREER in the lower room of Varis's home, hunched over a collection of wires. Yet another spark made him jolt and set his failed work down with a grunt.

"Would this work?" Varis asked, walking in and handing Greer a holo emitter, "My neighbor said he uses it to watch podracing, but it might work for communications."

"Thanks." Greer took it with a smile and turned it over in her hands. "Did Quila take Nik to school?"

Varis shook his head. "No, she's out training him."

"Training?"

"Yeah." Varis smiled. "All Mandalorians train their children from a young age to fight and defend themselves. It's part of the Resol'nare, the six tenets of being a Mandalorian."

He pointed back towards the door. "Quila took Nik out to the dunes today to practice with blasters. She's the better shot."

Greer grinned. "Really?"

Varis nodded. "We have a saying among the Mando. Ke barjurir gar'ade, jagyc'ade kot'la a dalyc'ade kotla'shya. It means, 'Train your sons to be strong but your daughters to be stronger'."

Kylo Ren chuckled. "I believe that."

"Your friend seems like a good Mando."

Greer set her tools down. "Why do you not live on Mandalore?" she asked, "You seem so committed to your people."

"Mandalorians are a nomadic group. We are not connected by a home or a species. We're connected by a culture." Varis shrugged. "My son has never stepped foot on Mandalore, but he is as much of a Mando as I am."

"Do you know where he got his eyes from?" Greer asked, leaning in closer.

Kylo Ren had wondered the same thing. The boy's icy blue gaze was a stark contrast from the dark brown color of his parents' eyes.

Varis shook his head. "No idea. Quila and I found him as a baby before we came to this planet. He had been abandoned on the side of the street in a sack."

"You adopted him?" Greer's brow furrowed with concern. "Is he allowed to go to Mandalore?"

"Of course. Adoption is not uncommon with Mandalorians. We don't care about species or origin. If you abide by our tenets and traditions, anyone is welcomed as a Mando."

Varis regarded Kylo Ren for a moment. "When are you planning on donning the armor?"

"What do you mean?"

Varis raised a brow. "If you're interested in a Mandalorian, you must expect to become one as well. She's certainly not going to leave behind her people and culture."
