Clara stares at the unfinished divorce papers her eyes glance up to her husband, Mike. "I don't want this," Mike slurs as he crushes his beer can. Clara winces at the sound. "I know. Lauren needs this though." Mike suddenly stands up causing his chair to scrape against the hardwood flooring and slams his hands on the table. Clara freezes in fear of her husband.
"You do not tell me what Lauren needs. Lauren needs a family!"
"Papi?"
Lauren sleepily wipes her eyes as a tiny yawn escapes her lips, "Why are you yelling?" Mike wipes away the sweat upon his forehead and lets a breath escape his lips. Clara quickly moves towards Lauren. "Papi is just tired, mija. Let's get you back to bed." Clara picks Lauren up to take her back to her room.
While Clara is tucking Lauren in, she hears the front door slam. "Is Papi mad at me? I heard my name." Lauren's eyes swell up with tears, "I even made him a drawing today." Clara's heart breaks for her daughter. "No, hun, no. Papi is not mad at you, okay?" Clara wipes away Lauren's fallen tears. "He is angry with Mami. I am doing my best to fix it though." Lauren nods her head and sniffles. Clara kisses Lauren on the top of the head, "Get some sleep." Clara turns on Lauren's nightlight and proceeds to turn off her bedroom light. She closes the door quietly.
Clara lets her own tears fall from her face. "I can do this."
