Camila finally finished all of her work for making her weekend completely grade free. She left the stacks of paper on her desk to hand back out on the following Monday. She gathered her things to take home and left locking her classroom behind her.She took out her phone checking the time. Roughly five in the afternoon. Camila did not realize how long she stayed late. Once outside the school, she caught glance of Lauren. "Lauren?" Camila approached the smaller girl worried. "Oh, hi, Miss Cabello." Lauren had obviously been crying. "Hun, who was supposed to pick you up?" Camila asked wiping her tears with the pad of her thumb. "My Papi. He was doing better, but now I am not so sure." Camila hid her anger, "Do you know how to get to your house?" Lauren nodded. "Okay. I can take you home, Lauren." Camila took her hand and led her to her car.
Lauren climbed in the back seat of Camila's car feeling slightly uncomfortable seeing Camila outside of the classroom. Camila made sure Lauren was buckled before taking off. Camila let Lauren pick out music hoping she would be more comfortable around her. She made sure to listen to her directions as well.
Camila pulled up to a rather cute house. She grew envious, however she knew it wasn't a happy home. Camila stepped out of her car to help Lauren out as well. She made sure she had her backpack before walking to the door. Camila heard yelling from outside. She felt Lauren tense up. Camila shared a small smile before knocking.
The yelling seized.
Mike opened the door revealing Lauren and Camila. "Mike?" Camila spoke. Mike furrowed his eyebrows, "Uh, hello, Camila." Clara stepped behind him, "Oh my goodness, Lauren! I am so sorry, mija." Lauren greeted her mother stepping inside away from Camila. "I noticed her outside. She seemed scared." Camila sassed. Clara sighed, "I was quite caught up. I am so sorry. It will not happen again." Clara gave her thanks to Camila moving Lauren away from the door.
"I didn't know you were Lauren's father." Mike nodded,"I guess you are her teacher she keeps mentioning." Camila nods connecting the dots to Clara's bruises as well as Lauren's. Mike breaks the silence, "I am trying to get better. You know that." Camila gulps feeling sick at her stomach, "I know, but at what cost?" Mike shook his head slamming the door in Camila's face.
Mike is the source of heart-wrenching abuse.
Camila left the porch of the Jauregui's house uneasily. She debated on knocking once more saying that Lauren forgot something just to make sure. But what was she going to do? She was ultimately powerless. Camila drove home; Lauren not leaving her mind. She felt so sick over the situation. She worried about seeing Mike again.
Camila opens the door of her home; setting her things in the door as well as her shoes. She moves to the living room taking out her phone.
She dials Normani's number. Normani instantly answers. "Hey Mani, can you come over?"
"Yeah, I am okay. I just-I just need to talk to someone."
Camila ended the phone call and waited for Normani's arrival. It was out of Camila's character to call her; she usually called Dinah, but she couldn't bring herself to do so. Dinah was spontaneous; she feared she would act out of anger rather than intellect.
Normani arrived shortly. Camila let her in and took the time to set out snacks for the both of them. "So, what is up, Mila?" Camila sighed, "one of my students. The one I mentioned at the group. Mike is her father." Normani's eyes widened, "oh my." Camila nodded, "I reported her situation to child services, but I do not think anything has been done for her. I am so worried, Mani." Normani nodded taking in the information, "Well, Mike asked to do a one on one with me. I can see if I can get more information out of him to report him again. Until then, try to take it easy, okay? You are doing so well."
Camila nodded, "Thanks, Mani."
