"Good Evening, Students." The minister said in a fake innocent voice, smiling widely at the students who were looking at the man like he was Voldemort in the flesh, threatening to Avada their loved ones.

The students looked very ready to Avada his sorry arse straight into the burning depths of hell, for that matter. The air shifted from a gloomy sadness to a tension you could cut with a knife instantly.

"You've got nerve showing your face here again!" a Slytherin girl yelled out.

Professor Dumbledore gave her a stern look but she just waved him off. "I thought we made it clear that we wanted no bloody part in your pathetic law!" the girl continued.

Shouts of agreement surrounded the hall.

The minister ignored them and placed the goblet on a golden stand in the middle of the great hall. All the tables had disappeared and the students stood in a large circle around the "cup of dread". No one dared to meet the eyes of anyone else in the room.

Ron reached for Hermione's hand and interlaced their fingers in an undo-able knot. His large hand swallowed hers as he squeezed it reassuringly, showing his care and love.

Harry did something similar but instead he wrapped his arm around Ginny's shoulder, pulling her into his side as the both of them kept their eyes locked on the goblet with bright blue flames emitting from it.

It brought memories back to the golden trio, some bad and some good, but none of them compared to this.

The minister and the professors were talking in hushed whispers as the circle of gloomy bodies stood in a deafening silence, only the chocked sobs of some students breaking the stillness.

Ginny moved closer into Harry's embrace as the minister shifted towards to the middle of the room, the conversation coming to a close end. Before he could stop himself, Harry placed a soft kiss on the top of Ginny's head and rested his head upon hers.

They looked perfect for each other.

Ron held Hermione by her waist now, showing more of a friend-like love than a romantic love. They looked tense compared to Ginny and Harry but, nonetheless, they seemed like a couple. It was a dreadful fate that awaited them. They had a large possibility of being torn from each other.

Draco was looking at Ron and Hermione with a tinge of anger and jealousy in him, but he couldn't explain it for the life of himself. He wanted to be the one comforting her but his pride and egotistical morals held him back.

He was disgusted by the unfamiliar urge trying to break free.

The minister noticed the connection between a few students and for a brief moment, possibly a quarter of a split-second, he felt their pain. He was guilty for their sorrow but he knew the purpose behind the law, and that kept his intentions in check. He quickly wiped his face blank once more.

Flashback

The ministry sat around a large circular table, Minister Poppins at the podium in front. They were whispering amongst each other as the prepared for their meeting.

"Welcome fellow ministry members." The minister cleared his throat. They immediately shifted their full attention to the man at the podium.

"We are gathered here on this fine night to discuss a very serious matter...two if you will." He paused and then continued. "The war is over and for that we can rejoice, however, we are not out of danger just yet." There was a chorus of gasps in the room.

"what do you mean, Minister?" an old, bearded man asked.

"Our population has dropped significantly and there is a new threat on the rise." The murmurs of the table of witches and wizards died down.

"We have to stop the danger before it gets out of hand." Suggestions were thrown through the room, none of them quite suitable.

"Why don't we enforce a birth law? All married couples are to have at least...three or more children?" The suggestion created a considering silence but the minister interrupted.

"The threat does not only lie in the endangerment of our kind, there is a prophecy on the rise. One witch and once wizard, both totally opposite, shall unite to form a powerful pairing called the Divine Pairing. Their power will be unstoppable, so powerful that not even Voldemort could have defeated it. They pose a threat to us. The birth law will only allow them to find each other and have more offspring, possibly growing stronger too." He finished.

The ministry nodded. "The Law is, however, a brilliant plan. We should enforce a marriage law, that way the pairing will be forced to be separated or if they are indeed placed together, due to the forced uniting of their relationship, their hate for each other will grow and eventually they will die." The minister said.

"How do we know that they will die?" another member asked.

"The prophecy states that they cannot live apart from each other. Their relationship must, however, form naturally. Thus, our law will force it and prevent their destiny from happening." The minister spoke and they agreed to form the Law.

End of flashback.

The minister snapped out of his deep memory and looked at the students. The plan was about to begin, the pair will be destroyed and the world will have to follow the ministry.

"Students, the time has come to meet your future partners. I, for one, am excited to see the results!" His voice was cheerful.

The students rolled their eyes at his inconsideration to their futures.

"With that said, please write your name and surname down on a piece of parchment and insert it into the goblet of fire. The results will be like that of the tri-wizard championship, a note with both the names of each partner will be thrown from it. I wish you all the best." He concluded.

The students reached for the quill and parchment that magically floated in the air before their glum faces. They begrudgingly wrote their names on the old piece of paper, signing their future away with such a simple notion. As they finished the last letter of their surname, the quill vanished and the students stood in a line, placing their paper in the firing goblet.

Once they had all done that, the minister announced that the sorting will begin in mere moments.

Ginny curled into Harry's arms, seeking the warmth of his love for possibly the last time. Her throat was burning as the tears she had no more of threatened to fall. Hermione hugged Ron and hid her face in the crook of his neck, silent tears wetting his shirt, her heart clenching painfully.

The blue flames now burned a magnificent purple.

The students gulped and bid a wordless farewell to their final moments of a free life.
