The portrait shut behind Hermione as she stepped into the Gryffindor common room, all eyes on her. She looked up at the students and shifted her weight between her feet.
"So, Hermione... What happened back there?" Seamus asked in his thick accent. His eyes narrowed, but not necessarily in an accusing way but rather in a "Don't you dare lie to us" way. The tension in the room was blatant.
"What makes you think I know?" She asked, looking him straight in the eye.
"You were the only person not scared or shocked by Malfoy's outburst!" Neville interrupted the silence. Hermione narrowed her chocolate eyes at the group of students and decided to change the topic.
"Don't you think there are more important things to worry about? Like oh, I don't know... THE BLOODY MINISTRY SIGNING OUR LIVES AWAY!" She shrieked.
That was all it took to light the fire in each student, the calm of the room burning away into ashes of pure rage and fury. Hermione took this as her chance to run up to her room, collapsing onto the floor with tears flowing down her cheeks. Her emotions were everywhere, but she was still in control.
Thoughts were running a marathon in her mind and her heart clenched at the idea of more trouble being thrown into her life.
Ginny heard her sobbing and ran to Hermione's side, trying to tame her wild emotions.
"Shh... It's going to be okay." Ginny shushed her friend, rubbing her tense shoulders and passing her a tissue. The redhead noticed the colour of her eyes were black again.
"Ginny, what's going on? Tell me I'm dreaming." Hermione begged. She was overwhelmed to the point where not even she, the brightest witch of her age, knew what to do about it all.
She thought about Draco's words and wondered if he, too, felt like breaking into a million pieces.
"It's not a dream, Hermione. We can't do anything about this. It's inevitable, our future is in the ministry's hands once more, but we can make the best of it." Ginny lied through her pearly white teeth.
She knew there was something they could do but Hermione's safety was not worth risking.
"I think your inner Hufflepuff is showing, Gin." Hermione laughed a weak giggle. "What happened to the war princess about to start a revolution?" Hermione sniffled and hugged her friend, feeling more intact than before.
"She got off her high horse and pulled her head from the clouds." Ginny laughed.
The two girls sat on the floor in front of Hermione's bed for a while longer, sobbing and laughing at times.
"What did McGonagall want?" The teary-eyed bookworm questioned.
Ginny tensed. "Nothing you should be stressing about... I think we should get some sleep." She whispered. They got into their beds and fell asleep, or at least one of them did.
Hermione lay awake.
Pulling the covers away, she left her dorm room and walked through the common room portrait, moving towards the library at a hurried pace. She couldn't sleep without doing some research on the strange things that happened tonight. Her mind was far too busy buzzing to think about anything else.
She pushed the doors of the library open and quietly moved to where she usually found her information. The restricted section.
Her fingers ran over the dusty spines of the books until they fell into an empty spot. Someone had taken a book. Were they still here? She stilled her movements and her breathing, listening for any sounds. She could faintly hear a page being turned in the far end of the room.
Sitting at a table, his eyes scrutinizing a page intently, was Draco Malfoy. Hermione took in a sharp breath, which he heard and looked up at the girl.
"Following me, are you? You could've at least been a bit quieter." He whispered harshly. He looked irritated. Hermione huffed and sat down in front of him.
"What are you doing here? It's past curfew." She said matter-of-factly.
Draco scoffed and glared at her with dark eyes. "Who are you to tell me that? Look where you are, Granger!" He pointed out, Hermione's face falling in realization.
"Oh..." she trailed off into the silence of the night. "Well, what are you doing?"
Draco sighed and showed her the cover of the book he was reading. Hermione nodded. "Thought I'd do a bit of research about what happened tonight. I've had no luck as yet." He said gruffly.
Hermione grabbed the book from his clasps and went to the index, having a feint idea of what to look at. She turned to page 394.
Prophecies.
Draco, who was still in both disbelief and anger at the sudden loss of his book, took the book back and looked at the page she had turned to.
"What are you on about! This is not a bloody prophecy Granger, has your brain shrunk into a peanut size since the war or have you always only been book-smart, lacking common sense?" Draco rolled his eyes but read over the page regardless. His eyes widened. He shook his head rapidly and looked at Hermione.
Hermione furrowed her eyebrows in confusion at his odd reaction. "What?" she asked.
Draco looked pale but soon his expression faded into disgust. "We're a bloody prophecy!" he shouted out.
Hermione flinched at his loud voice, looking around the library to see if anyone noticed his yell. Draco realized his mistake and copied Hermione's actions. His eyes were glowing a deep black again, he looked like a demon ready to pounce the angel in front of him. Hermione's eyes were still brown, however, and she kept her calm.
"I figured as much. I felt something, I don't know what, earlier when you were having your breakdown." She confessed.
"It wasn't a breakdown Granger! I don't know what it was, but it most definitely wasn't that, and how are you so bloody calm about this!" He glared at her choice of words.
She waved him off and continued, "I felt a ... connection ... to what you felt. Remember I told you about the burning sensation I had before your break– uhm, had that reaction?" Draco nodded.
"Well, the feeling I had started dying and faded away while you were on the floor screaming your lungs out. It was as if you screamed my pain away while screaming your frustration away. I-I felt the boil up to it all as well." She finished looking to Draco.
He didn't respond immediately.
"Say something..." Hermione pleaded.
"What can I say, Granger?" he said in frustration. He read the pages on prophecies further. His widened every now and then, his jaw clenching as well. He finally finished and slammed the book shut with a loud echo, looking into the distance with anger.
"Would you stop that!" Hermione said, referring to the slammed book. Draco rolled his eyes.
"What does it say? This doesn't only affect you, Malfoy!" She glared at him with sharp, blackening eyes.
"Well, Granger... It seems that we are a predestined power couple. Quite literally. We both have some sort of power that compliments each other, the same yet completely different. Together we are supposed to stop some sort of attack or problem or whatever, the book says something about that but it's not really specific."
Hermione was baffled beyond words. "W-what?"
Draco rolled his eyes at her disbelief. "Yes, Granger. We have to work together on something. Pathetic." He growled. "And to top it all off, we are apparently bloody soulmates! SOULMATES! The Divine Pairing!"
Draco and Hermione were bound by a curious and unexpected ironic twist of fate.
They were soulmates.
