I looked away quickly. I could feel heat rushing to my cheeks. I fixed my glasses and said “that was really good.”I didn’t look at him. I was starting to get butterflies. “Thank you.” He said. “You want to continue or are you done for the day?” he asked. “uhm it’s up to you.” I wanted to stay but that would be embarrassing to say. “I think we are done for the day.” He said. I suddenly felt sad. Was I intruding? “So we can eat.” He finished. “are you hungry.” I thought about it. My stomach thought for me. “yea I haven’t eaten since I was at borders.” I said. I chuckled at myself, remembering the boy watching me eat. “What’s so funny?” he sounded amused. I looked at him. He was smiling at me. “just remembered something that happened to me today. “I chuckled again. I didn’t know why I found it funny but it was. “and what happened to you?” he asked. “Okay so you know how I was at Borders. Well I was in my car eating and I asked the weird kid how he knew which car was mine and he said he saw me eating. And its funny cause I was observing people who walked by. I just find it fascinating how we observe people and how we don’t know if we’re being observed.” I laughed. Gosh I was such a nerd. “You know you think like an adult.” He smiled at me. “I get that a lot.”I said. He stood up and so did i. “That’s a good thing. so what do you want to eat?” he said. “I really don’t know. You chose.” I said. “how bout we go to Pinks.” He said. Pinks was a fancy restaurant. “okay” I said. “oh I dove here.”I just remembered. “That’s okay we’ll take my car and then come back here so you can take your car home. “ he said. “alright that’s fine with me. “ he ushered me out to his garage. His car was a 2011 Audi R8. It just recently came out. I saw it on t.v. It was silver with tinted windows. It was a very expensive car. “Wow. Are you having a midlife crisis?” I joked. “No. how old do you think I am? Thirty?” he laughed. “No fourty five of course” I teased. “Very funny. I’m only 22.” He said. Ohhhh so he was 22. That was very young to be a teacher. He opened my door for me like a gentleman. So chivalry still existed. I smiled at myself. He entered the car and saw me smiling. “Why are you smiling?” he asked. “ Just amused that chivalry still exists today.” I said. “yes and it’s slowly decreasing. “ he was smiling. He started the car and he let it idle. It was silent. I was looking out the window. He started to back out. The sun was still out, but on the verge of setting. The sky was orange with a hint of purples and pinks. It was beautiful. “What are you thinking about?” he asked. “Oh just thinking about the beautiful sky. “ I said. He looked out his window for a moment. “it is beautiful, but I’ve seen much more beautiful things.” He looked straight ahead, smiling. I wonder what he was thinking but I didn’t ask.
We arrived at Pinks and it wasn’t busy. The hostess led us to a table for two. It felt like I was on a date with Mr. Sinclare. It felt weird. I mean I know students dated their professors but I just didn’t see myself dating him. I mean he was a brilliant handsome guy and I was this girl whose never been on a date before let alone have a boyfriend. I was a young girl who wore glasses and one might call nerdy. That was why the girls in my high school tormented me. It was because I wasn’t beautiful like them, with their perfect hair and curves. They ruined my life.
As if sensing my bad mood, Mr. Sinclare said something but I didn’t quite hear it. I snapped out of my reverie and shook my head. “What?” “I said are you alright? You look like you want to kill someone. “he said amused. “oh yea I’m fine. Just thinking about things.” I said, being as vague as possible. I didn’t want to tell him my past. “What things?”he pressed on. “ just my high school days.” I sounded old when I said that. I felt old. “oh reminiscing about old boyfriends and crushes” he smiled. Yea if I had one before. I thought to myself. “Not quite. I’ve never had a boy nor did I crush on one.” The boys in my school weren’t the brightest light bulbs. “Oh too good for them that’s why” he said. “Not exactly. The boys at my school were more into the Barbie type of girls. I was more of the brains and I didn’t like them because they were too immature.” I said. The waitress came to our table. I hadn’t notice but we were leaned into each other. I sat up straight. She was looking at Mr. Sinclare. I mentally rolled my eyes. She asked us what we wanted to drink. I stuck with water. I didn’t like soda or juice, it was too sweet. Mr. Sinclare got a Diet Coke. I smiled. “Diet Coke?”I said. “Yea I like it. and really water. Who just gets water?” he joked. I laughed and said “I do. I’m not a big fan of soda or juice.” “You are such an old lady.” He said. “hey I’m only seventeen.” I said. “yea but your mental age is like 52.” He teased. “and what’s your mental age?” I asked. He thought about it. “I’d say 43.” He smiled. “Why am I older?” He chuckled. “because you are. Think differently than most teenagers and adults.” He put emphasis on the and. “So not fair.” I smiled. The waitress came back with our drinks. She asked us what we wanted to order. We were so into our conversation that we didn’t even look at the menu. Mr. Sinclare ordered fettuccini pasta and I got a shrimp scampi.
He was looking at me as I wiped the silverware with my napkin. “What?” I said. He smiled. “I think you’re they only person I’ve seen who does that.” “well it’s not sanitary.” I said. “Wow.” Was all he said. “Thanks Mr. Sinclare for taking time off to give me lessons.” I said sincerely. He looked at me. “No, it’s my pleasure. You’re such a brilliant student and you can call me Sebastian. I hear Mr. Sinclare every day. It’s nice to hear my first name sometimes.” He said. “Sebastian. Feels weird. I’m so used to saying Mr. Sinclare.” I said. “Now you’ll have to get used to Sebastian. Besides you didn’t know I was a teacher when you nearly trampled me that first day.” He said pressing his lips together to hold in his laugher. “I did no such thing. How do you know that? I probably thought you were a teachers aid.” I said even though he was right. “I saw your reaction when I started class.” He smiled. Go gosh so he saw me gawking at me that day. “so I was a little shocked.” I said. “a little? You were stupefied.” He said. “Not even. I was just shocked that you were so young and teaching.” I said. “More like bummed out.” He smirked. “and why do you say that?” “Because once you saw me as a teacher, I was labeled updateable.” He said. Oh gosh. This was so embarrassing. So he was observing my behavior. “And you think that because...”I said trailing off. “Because I saw it in your eyes.” He said serious. Before I could reply, the waitress brought our food. I suddenly lost my appetite. “no you didn’t.” I said. “yep I’m pretty sure I did.” He said. “What does it matter.” I said. Looking at my food and poking it with my fork. I wasn’t hungry anymore. “It matters to me.” he said. I was still poking at the shrimp. I didn’t say anything. “I thought you were hungry.” He said. He took his own fork. And started to twirl his noodles. “yea I am.”I took a bite of the shrimp. We ate in silence, both in deep though.
I finished my food and sat there twiddling my fingers. Sebastian was watching me. “bored?” I looked up. “huh? Oh no. just deep in thought.” I said. “What are you thinking of?” he liked to ask me that questions. “Just how easily I’m easy to read. “ I said. “well. It’s not a bad thing.” he said. “how so” “I know how you’re feeling and when you’re angry or concentrating.” He said. “and that’s good?” “Yea. I know when to give you space or time to think.” He smiled. “I guess.” I said. He laughed. “what’s so funny?” I looked at him. “You just amuse me Jayla Dawson.” He had a huge grin. He looked younger. I smiled.
The waitress came with the check and Sebastian put his card in quickly and gave it to the waitress. I frowned. He wouldn’t let me pay. He said I was a college student so I should save money. I scowled at him. He just gave me one of his brilliant smiles that I would never get tired of. He didn’t even let know how much it was. On the car ride back, I thought about this evening. It felt like a date. I was smiling on the inside. Even though I knew it wasn’t a date, I could only fantasize. We reached his home and I was sad. It was back to my lonely dorm. It was almost ten o clock. I’ve spent six hours with Sebastian and it felt short. I got out of the car and he did too. “Thanks again Mr.- oops I mean Sebastian for taking time off just for me.” I said. “no problem. Sometimes I get lonely here. And I had a great time.” He smiled. “me too.” He walked me to my car. Again so chivalrous. I turned and he was inches away from me. He smiled. “see you tomorrow. At five right.” He said softly. I nodded. “good night and I had fun our little date.” He said. My eyes widened. He said date. He chuckled at my expression and walked to his door. I got into my car and he waited till I was gone.
On the ride home, all I could think about was Mr. Sinclare. He said date. I smiled. His words kept playing in my mind. My thoughts were restless. I reached my dorm and took a hot shower. I was still thinking about today’s events. Then Blake appeared in my mind. It was weird, in some way I was attracted to Blake. I took out his card from my pocket and set it on my desk. I wonder if I should go on a date with a guy who was actually my age. I really didn’t know. I was too infatuated with Mr. Sinclare.
