They had met with twelve agencies and around thirty kids, but they were getting nowhere. Even with all of Arthur's and Andromeda's help. There were still a lot of people with prejudice against werewolves. Not to mention the reluctance to allow a gay couple adopt. They met with all kinds of children, each one of them sweet in their own way, but nothing.
Remus tried to pretend that it wasn't wearing him down. He had been prepared for this to happen, yet it was still difficult. Sirius was taking it just as hard, but he tried to remain positive for Remus's sake. Harry, who would be leaving for Hogwarts in another month or so, wasn't sure how to help his Godparents. He simply tried his best to make them laugh.
The three of them were sitting around the dinner table, each working on something, and listening to the rain beat against the roof. Harry was cleaning his broom - again, Remus was working to make sure they had indeed grabbed everything Harry would need for school, and Sirius was writing a letter to Andromeda. She had been more than helpful in the adoption process. Sighing, Sirius glanced up at his Godson.
"You do realize you're not allowed to take that with you to school, right?" Harry shrugged, but didn't deviate from his task.
"Cleaning it helps me relax." At those words, Sirius could only chuckle.
"Fair enough. However, now I am curious as to why you feel the need to relax?" That made Harry pause. He looked up at Sirius, who had steepled his fingers in front of himself.
"I dunno. I just do." Harry pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose before turning back to trimming the tail end of his broom. Sirius hummed as he watched him carefully.
"We'll have to go back to Diagon for a select few things, but other than that I think we finally have everything for the first year." Remus sighed happily as he gave his list a final once over before putting it away. Harry looked up once more a pout on his face.
"And you're sure I can't get my own owl, uncle Moony?" Remus and Sirius glanced at one another before the former shook his head gently.
"Not at the moment, pup. I'm sorry. I wish we could." Harry deflated once more and calmly went back to what he was doing. It took everything Sirius possessed not to chuckle even the slightest bit.
There was only one rather large reason Sirius and Remus weren't getting Harry an owl, and that reason was Hagrid. The groundskeeper had specifically asked if he could be the one to take Harry to get his owl since he wasn't going to be able to attend his birthday dinner. Sirius and Remus had wholeheartedly agreed to the idea because it had been Hagrid to pull Harry from the destruction at Godric's Hollow.
A pecking on the window pulled at their attention, and Remus moved to let the poor bird in out of the wet weather. Sirius tossed him the bag of owl treats from the cabinet as the owl stuck it's leg out dutifully. Remus took the letter and offered the bird the treat before it took off once more.
"Who's it from?" Sirius moved to stand next to Remus, who was examining the letter closely. Not many people knew where they lived, which means they would've had to have been informed.
"It looks like it's from an agency, but it's not one that we've visited with." Remus's hands were trembling slightly, but he made no move to open the envelope.
"Maybe Arthur or Drom looked into another one?" Sirius took the letter into his own hands and stared at the address.
"Maybe. . . I think I'm going to give her a call, just to be sure. Don't open that yet." Remus was chewing on his bottom lip worriedly as he shuffled into the next room. Sirius sighed and sat back down at the table, still gazing at the envelope. The handwriting was very neat and quite loopy.
