King hated most people, preferring the company of his mother or brothers over anyone else.
Remy too preferred the company of his family over others, but not because he hated people. No, never for that reason. He was scared of them. He was scared of most things. It was his nature, who he was, and as long as I've known him he's been skittish and shy.
Chase was an entirely different story. He didn't hate everything, nor was he scared. He loved everything. Beautiful, brightly speckled butterflies to the dull browns and grays of the moths. The golden rays of the sun to the silver gleam of the moon. The emerald green blades of grass to the pattering of the rain. Everything.
Chase.
He was so...happy. So hopeful and optimistic. So...pure.
And what did he get in return?
Crippled.
Forced to drag his legs around.
He would never be able to run again. He could never hunt with his brothers, the sound of his legs dragging on the ground would alert the prey of their arrival. He had a difficult time climbing on the furniture, such as my bed or couch.
So when I saw him there, hanging by his legs, I knew it was no accident.
It couldn't even be mistaken for an accident.
He was in a tree, hanging by his mangled legs, stomach ripped open with his intestines hanging out. His eyes. His beautiful forest green eyes, eyes that held a sparkle of life, were stabbed, dry blood crusted around his eye sockets and staining his fur. His jaw...that was a different story. On the ground, a foot or two away from where his body was hanging, was where his lower jaw lied.
I remember silently crying. Out of grief or anger, I couldn't say. Maybe it was both.
However, I knew something for certain.
I would make whoever did this pay.
