The song came to an end and I remembered where I was and what my job was. I put my hands back on my lap and opened my eyes.
"You play well," Shu complimented.
I smiled at the small praise and looked at him. "What about you?" I asked him.
He looked at me and I couldn't see his eyes properly due to the dark, but I saw his stoic expression and slightly parted lips, the glint of his white fangs barely viewable through the darkness of the room.
I felt myself being harshly pushed down against the firm yet soft surface of the piano bench. I flinched at the impact and I opened my eyes to see Shu on top of me.
"Let's see if your blood is as fine quality as your playing," he said with a slightly amused smile.
I felt my eyes burn but I held back the tears. I'd never been bitten before and I was really not looking forward to it. I could die in seconds at his hands, but it was also part of my job to endure it, especially from Shu. I know I looked like a crybaby with my eyes glossing, but the idea of perhaps losing my life at any moment wasn't exactly a settling thought. I turned my head to the right to show my neck at full view to him as he lowered his head. When he saw my action, he stopped.
I felt a tear slip from my right eye but I closed both, not wanting to see what would come next. I soon after felt a sharp pain in my neck and I suddenly felt numb.
Don't let yourself get too comfortable. They're vampires, I kept reminding myself.
He took his fangs out and I kept my eyes closed, still not wanting to see. I felt the slightly cold feeling from his body disappear and he stood up, walking back to the couch.
I opened my eyes slightly and looked up at the ceiling, placing my hands over my stomach and closing my eyes. I let myself then replay the melody I had just played, and I lowered the volume on my earphones, sinking in the memory.♪︎♫︎
I opened my eyes and turned to the clock on the wall.
The school day was almost over for sure. I sat up and saw Shu sleeping on the couch. I observed him for a moment and I noticed something around his neck that I didn't see before.
He was wearing earphones, just like me.
Hearing a song through earbuds is never the same as feeling yourself play it or hearing it in person, that's why hearing it live is much more memorable. I wondered for a moment if he'd agree with that little thought.
I snapped from my thoughts as I saw him sit up, and I waited for his next move.
"Let's go," he said plainly, standing and walking to the door.
I nodded and stood, grabbing my bag and following after him.
We arrived at the limo and I kept my eyes to floor as I sat next to Shu.
"So, Sapphire. I noticed you weren't in any of your classes," Reiji said, his eyes on his book.
Everyone turned to look at me, and it was silent for a moment.
"She was with me," Shu informed his younger brother.
Reiji heard Shu's response and continued to read his book, ignoring him, I assumed.
Books. I remembered reading those on a daily. Although it was a distant memory, I could somehow still remember the best stories I'd read through to the end, and which had left a lasting impression on me. The memories seemed so far yet so close when I examined them closely and fully thought them out.
"You keeping her away from us now?" Ayato asked loudly. Shu ignored him and Ayato looked at me. "I will taste your blood, Cupcake," he stated, giving me a smirk to accompany the promise.
I looked out the window, keeping my eyes on the trees passing by.♪︎♫︎
I sat in my room with the apparent homework I had to do that Reiji had given me for my classes. With the proper attention, I finished the homework in one hour and began putting all the work away.
"Oi, Cupcake!" Ayato called out from the door.
I turned around to see him standing casually. "Yes, Ayato?" I asked quietly.
"You finished your work already?" he asked a bit surprised.
I nodded and walked towards him as he stood close to the bed. He wrapped his arms around my waist and brought me closer to him, moving the hair from my neck and leaning in.
"I'm thirsty as hell and I haven't tasted your blood yet," he said before biting down on my neck.
I looked elsewhere and stayed quiet.
"Eh!? Your blood tastes like Pancake's," he said surprised after he took his fangs out. "Why are you so quiet?" he suddenly asked, diverging from the topic.
I looked at him and he furrowed his brows angrily. "Answer me!" he said a bit louder than before, making it clear he demanded an answer.
"I don't know."
Lies.
"You don't know!? Haven't you ever heard of pain?" he asked incredulously.
"Yes," I answered simply.
His face relaxed and he had a confused look on his face. "What happened to you?" he asked annoyed.
I stayed silent, refusing to answer such a question when I knew better than to give a response to someone who couldn't care less about me, dead or alive. I knew Ayato would never understand, he lives in the mansion and has a whole other type of advantage over humans.
"Tch. I'm leaving. Reiji wants you down for dinner in five minutes," he said letting go of me and walking out.
