-=Dream's POV=-

I groaned staring at the screen of my laptop. Another job application was rejected, I had a pile of homework, and I was so tired I couldn't see straight. I wanted nothing more than to flop onto my bed and sleep into next week, but I needed to stay awake to meet him.

Then I heard it. The soft padding of footsteps coming up the stairs. There was a muffled "Goodnight" and the sound of a door softly closing, but the main lights in the hall weren't flicked off. I bit my "lip". One of my friends were still awake, I couldn't sneak out yet. I glanced at the clock, it was already 8:45 pm. I was incredibly late.

Debating if I should risk it or not, I heard the sound of footsteps once again. I sighed in relief when the clicking of a light switch was heard, and the light coming from around the edges of my closed bedroom door was gone.

I closed the laptop and quietly pushed myself away from my desk, getting up and grabbing a random hoodie, then flicking off my bedroom light. I put the hoodie on and slowly pushed open my door.

Creeping downstairs while using my phone screen for light, I grabbed the keys and left the house, smiling to myself as I made my way to the park.

-=??? POV=-

I sat there in the grass, now beginning to worry. Maybe he couldn't come? I shook my head and admired the stars that reminded me so much of him. No, he's just late, he's never missed one of our 'meetings' and I don't think he ever will.

Suddenly, someone tackled me from behind. I yelped as they snuggled into my back.

"Crossy! It's just me! Don't tell me you forgot?"

I smiled at this and turned around to see my dearest Dreamy kneeling in the grass behind me.

"I didn't" I said, pulling him closer and stroking the top of his skull, "You just scared me."

Dream laughed, "Riiiight"

"Oh! I have news!"

Dream looked up and locked eyes with me.

"What?"

"I finally quit!"

Dream's face lit up as soon as I said those words.

"Really?! Yay! Now I don't have to worry about you constantly running from the law!" He joked.

"Har har" I said, pushing Dream away and flopping onto my back, "Anyways, enough 'bout me, what about you, Dreamy? You had that job application right? How'd that go?"

-=Dream's POV=-

Not this, why this? I had come here to forget about that...

"...It...was rejected..." I said, my mood quickly turning dark.

Cross sat up and faced me, his eyes locking with mine. "Oh.. I'm sorry, Dreamy. Maybe I can-"

"No, Crossy, you've already helped me enough." I cut him off.

"Dream, why don't you just move back in with your brother? Then all your problems would be solved!" He reasoned.

I shook my head. "Crossy, I can't. You know that Nightmare doesn't like Ink. He wouldn't let him live in the mansion with him. I'm not about to break my promise to make life easier!"

Ah yes, the promise. The one thing I had sworn on my life to keep all those years ago...

~Flashback~

I was 9 at the time, Ink was 8, and we hadn't met Blue yet. I had known Ink for over a year at this point, but I had never been to his house. We would always meet in the park or go to my house, but never had we ever gone to play at Ink's house, and every time I asked him about it he would ignore me.

I became curious, so, one day, while we were playing together, I asked him about his parents. He ignored me, as usual, but I stayed determined and continued asking him. Finally, Ink admitted it, he was an orphan. I asked him if he had been adopted yet and he.... started crying.

He broke down, telling me how all the people that had fostered him never wanted him, because he was 'strange' or 'to out there' or 'not what they were looking for'. He told me that other kids called him 'a freak' and 'soulless' and that I was his only friend. I immediately felt my soul fill with empathy, and I knew right then and there I would help him. So I calmed Ink down and made him a promise, one I swore on my life to keep.

The promise was to give him a family, a home, someplace to belong, where he would be safe, and most importantly, I promised him that I would never leave him. No. Matter. What.

Ink's face lit up when I and my family walked into the orphanage a week later. I had told my mother everything, and she agreed to help me. But, unfortunately, not all stories have happy endings.

Mother died, Nightmare changed, he started hating Ink, saying that I basically abandoned him to spend more time with Ink.

Nightmare became extremely upset over this. So upset that he kicked Ink out on Ink's 15th birthday. But I wouldn't break my promise, no, it wasn't even the promise at this point. Ink was family too, and I wasn't about to let my family suffer.

I went with Ink. Blue joined us later on, after I had figured out a house for me and Ink with the small amount of money I had as inheritance. We lived like this for about a month before the problems started....

  ~Flashback End~

I sighed, I should stop thinking about it. Even though it made me feel guilty, I left every night to focus on myself for an hour or two, or else I would probably go insane from stress.

"Dreamy, we could-" Cross started, he had obviously been thinking about MY problems.

Shaking my head, I snuggled up to him and looked up at the dark expanse above us.

"Let forget about it, okay? I just wanna watch the stars..."

Little did I know I would regret these moments later on.
