E M E L Y

I feel all the stress of not being able to understand the damn algebra leaving me as soon as I walk into my music classroom. Mister Nickson always was my favorite teacher, even in the years that I didn't have him in my music class.

The walls covered with posters of bands and artists looking down on me like Queen, 5 seconds of summer and Adele make me feel like I'm in my own poster-covered room at home instead of in some classroom.

I sit down at my desk in the back, and put my black backpack with a few pins down carefully next to me. The girl sitting next to me sighs when she sees mister Nickson walking towards the front of the class to start today's lesson.

"First, absence, but I think I saw everyone, right?" Mr. Nickson says as he closes the door.

"Yes mister Nickson." the class says in unison. We always do that, even when not everyone is there. It's an unwritten to rule that no one, not even the goodie goodies snitch when someone skips the lesson. Addiction to that rule is that you never skip without a good reason.

"Alright then. Today we're starting our new project, and it's based on knowing your limits. You are going to be working in bands, which I already formed, yes I know that it's unfair but I want something else than boybands and girl bands who don't take this lesson serious.
As well will you guys be performing in these bands on the schools music night, which is on the 18th of July. Yes that is a Saturday night. Yes I agree that that isn't acceptable. You guys will be able to skip my Friday morning class that week trough, so that makes up for it. I will show you guys the bands now."

He walks towards the computer and struggles a bit until some student with ginger hair helps him.

I see my name in the first group, together with Jason, Mike and Day. The only person I know in this group is Day, so I start looking for the blonde girl.

She sees me looking and waves for me from in the corner of the room, underneath my favorite poster in the classroom, also the only one framed, a limited edition Freddie Mercury poster. I walk towards the group existing of a small blonde girl, a taller guy with blue hair and some guy sitting on a table with brown hair, who I think is smart for sitting down, so I sit down next to him.

"Can I get your attention again please?" Mister Nickson calls for us, so I turn around to look at him. "I see you have all have already moved to your groups. Today you guys will be getting time to get to know each other and you guys will divide the roles. Not everyone in your group might want to sing and not everyone can play all instruments, so make sure you know each others musical talents.
You guys will also decide on a band name and the platform you want to perform on. It can be anything, from a small coffee shop somewhere in the village to a festival.
Tomorrow I will explain the other stuff, just do this for the remaining time of the lesson, which is about 40 minutes. Use your time wise, or don't. I don't really care. The grade you get for this will be 50% of your final grade so I would choose to be useful trough."

We all look at each other. "So get to know each other, just say your full name and two facts about you?" the guy with brown hair suggests.

"Sure. I'll start. My legal name's Jason Evergreen but please call me Alex since I'm non-binary and use they/them pronouns. I play football in my free time. Also, I'm not exactly out to my parents so please use my name Jason and he/him pronouns in front of them." the person with blue hair says, who apparently is Alex.
