"Run!" she cried.

Every instinct in me was telling me to do as she said and get as far away as I could get, but I couldn't. My legs were fixed to the floor beneath my feet, refusing to move an inch. My eyes remained frozen on her.

Kayla Grey, the girl who had saved my life so many times even when it was hers that was in mortal danger. And she was doing it again. I'd gotten into trouble, big trouble and once again she was bailing me out, but this was too high a cost for her to pay for me.

I screamed for her. "I'm not leaving without you!"

She was completely surrounded now by Caleb's men. She knocked a right hook to the one directly in front of her and kept going with what she did best.

"Ash, get out of here NOW!" she screamed. "Forget about me. Just get out of here!"

A rumble shook everything in front of my eyes. Everything was out of focus. Caleb's men had stopped attacking Kayla, distracted by the ruckus around us, but one still had a tight hold of her arm. The walls of the cave trembled violently. Rocks began to fall from the ceiling, clouding the air with dust. More began to drop from above our heads.

I found Kayla's glistening silver eyes. We both knew what was going to happen and neither of us could stop it. It was so small I almost didn't register it. The tiniest tear I had seen was now trapped on the corner of Kayla's eye. I'd never seen Kayla cry before. I felt a sharp pang in my chest as I watched her. But her face wasn't of fear from what was going to happen, but from something else only I couldn't place what it was.

I heard the noise from directly above my head. I dared myself to look up to see what was already falling to crush me.

It all happened too quickly.

Kayla broke free from the man's iron grip, he tried to grab for her again but she slipped out of his reach. She bounded straight into my chest, knocking me down and out of the way.

Those last few seconds passed as if in slow motion. Kayla's velvet hands brushed on my shirt as she pushed me out of the way and, as if they were an elastic band, they snapped away from me as I landed on my back on the rocks.

Pain shot through every inch of my body as I plunged to the ground. Rock dust was everywhere around me, and on me, creating a cloud of almost mist. Warm liquid was oozing from my head, gushing down the side of my face. Sitting myself up I hesitantly felt the gash the rocks had created on my head. The blood was now trickling down my chin. I cringed when I tasted the metallic fluid on my lip.

I stopped breathing when I saw what was left of the damage.

Underneath the rocks was a sheet of black silhouette hair sweeping out from under the rubble. That hair... dark, raven hair...

No...No!

"Kayla!"

I didn't care if those guys were still around and out to get me. I didn't care if they heard me. I ran to the rubble and fell on my knees, picking up the rocks and throwing them aside to get to Kayla underneath them. Finally, I'd uncovered her. She was just laying there, her face hidden by her sleek hair. She wasn't moving. She wasn't breathing. Gently, hands trembling, I pulled her out from the rocks and cradled her to my torso. She was so still. I pushed back her hair from her snow white face. Her eyes were closed. She looked as if she were only sleeping, as if she'd wake up if I moved her as much as a centimetre.

I traced her cheeks with my fingertips, running them over her eyelids and down her jaw. My fingers quivered over her soft pink lips. My eyes prickled, my vision completely blurred. I blinked, letting the tears fall down my face

"No." My voice shook uncontrollably "Please, Kayla, please wake up."

I pressed two fingers where her pulse should've been. Nothing.

A huge sob escaped my throat, followed by a thousand more. No, Kayla couldn't be gone. She just couldn't.

I pulled her limp, fragile body close to my chest, bending my head so my cheek rested on her forehead. More drops of tears trickled down my cheeks and onto her angelic, heart shaped face.

"Please," I pleaded. "Please Kayla, please don't leave me."

If she were alive, Kayla would've told me to stop blubbering and get up. But she didn't, because Kayla wasn't there anymore. The body that I was helplessly clinging onto was just the empty shell of the girl that used to be. There was no essence of her left there. I was looking at her, as if she was asleep, but there was nothing left now.

Kayla was gone, dead. And half of me had gone with her.
