*Beth's POV*

Zane left without another word to me. Although we weren’t close, to say the very least, after all the only words that ever came out of his mouth were either orders or insults. But it wouldn’t have killed him to just play nice for a day or just not do anything unnecessary, like trying to kill me for one thing.

I was left standing in the middle of the foyer alone, Zane’s words still echoing though my head. “It’s not as if you can’t figure out what he’s up to.”

The truth was I had no idea what he was talking about. I knew he was talking about Cairo, that much had been obvious. But the rest I had no clue. I hadn’t spoken to Cairo in a long time. The only contact I ever got from him was through Zane, after all, he spoke to him a whole lot more than I did.

Zane hated me for sure, but he wasn’t the type to play games. If he’d just wanted to get to me then he would’ve just made a grab for me, not spin a story about our dad.

What the hell was Zane talking about?

Cole poked his head from the kitchen door.

“Is it safe?”

I waved him in with my hand.

“Relax. He smoked out about a minute ago.”

What sounded like a breath of relief came from Cole’s mouth as he stepped out into the grand foyer. His eyes darted around the walls and windows, scanning the place for any signs of someone else’s presence besides ours.

When he was satisfied we were alone, he exhaled.

“That was a close one.”

I nodded. “Garnet got him out though didn’t she?”

He nodded in response.

He looked up, his brow furrowed slightly. “Please tell me you couldn’t sense them.”

I shook my head. “No, I couldn’t-” I stopped, looking back at him. “You blocked them didn’t you?”

Cole’s classic smile spread across his lips, his crystal eyes sparkling in the chandelier light above our heads.

“What did you think I was doing in the kitchen? Making sandwiches?”

“Hiding more likely.” His face dropped slightly. “You’re scared shitless of Zane and you know it.”

As if to prove otherwise, he shrugged his jacket tighter on himself, pulling his shoulders back so he was standing up straight.

“I am not scared of him.” he denied. “It’s not exactly easy keeping a barrier around two separate moving people you know, especially when one’s a witchy-vamp.”

I strolled over to him, placing one hand on his shoulder in a patronising manner.

“Of course it is. You’re such a powerful warlock.”

He smirked at my sarcasm.

“You’re so kind, boss, truly.”

I walked past him into the kitchen, laughing at him as I went.

I may have been saying the words with sarcasm, but they were true.

In all seriousness, it was something difficult to do. It was took a lot of power to keep a barrier up around two people who kept moving to shield their thoughts and overall presence from two Shadow Beings, especially one like Zane.

But Cole was powerful. Actually he was one of the most powerful warlocks his age, not surprising seeing as his mother was one of the daughters of the Elder Cor Witch. And, yes, if you put two and two together then you’d figure out that if Cole’s mother was a Cor witch and Garnet’s mother was as well, then they were related. You’d be right. Garnet Cor-Sanguis and Cole Cor were family, cousins in fact, and were both grandchildren of the Elder Cor Witch.
