Damn my freaking alarm clock with the freaking dead batteries that had to freaking die during the night! This was just perfect. It was the first day back to school and I was going to be late. Thank you Universe for ruining my morning! Then again this was usual for me. After all I was Ash Gautier, the Tardy King.
I was out of breath and my legs felt as if they were going to fall off as I burst into first class for Tuesday. Personal and Social Health Education, also known as waste of my life class...just what I needed...
Mrs Lampas gave me one of her usual ‘Well, well...’ looks as I burst into the class full of students.
“Thank you for joining us, Mr Gautier.”
I quickly stepped to my seat and sat down. Will was trying desperately to stop himself from laughing at me from the next seat. That was just typical of Will. He laughed at everything and anything. I quickly mouthed at him to shut up.
Mrs Lampas got back to what she was saying.
“As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted.” She glared at me on that last line. “This term will be one of your hardest. We have a set of brand new modules and exams coming up in a couple of months so if you’re hoping for an easy going term, prepare to be severely disappointed.”
Not that anyone actually dared to in Mrs Lampas classes, but you could practically hear the groans and curses from all of the students’ heads.
“To shake things up a bit, I thought we could have a fresh change of seating.”
This time people did actually curse and groan, loudly.
Matt Wallace moaned from the back.
“Why Miss? It’s not going to make any difference.”
Everyone complained then. Will and I clocked eyes, both of us groaning internally.
Will was my best mate. No, that was a lie; he was way more than that. Will and I had known each other our whole lives. We were brothers, always have been and always will be. We knew everything about each other, and we both knew this class was going to suck.
Ignoring her student’s discomfort, Mrs Lampas began to read out the new seating plan.
“Will, you’ll be sitting with Mia over here.” she gestured to the seat Rochelle was in next to Mia. “And Rochelle will be sitting next to Aaron.”
She read the pairs off of her list for about five minutes. Almost everyone was sitting in their new seats except me.
“And Ash will be sitting next to Elizabeth.”
I frowned at my desk. There was an Elizabeth in our class?
I glanced at Will. He shrugged to confirm that he had no clue either, which was unusual because Will was the guy who knew pretty much everything.
Our little town of Greenvale wasn’t exactly the largest place in the country. In fact, it was one of the smallest in South England. Not much happened here without everyone knowing about it. If there was a new girl in school, it was the first I’d heard of it.
Mr Lampas looked at me as if I had special needs because I didn’t know where to go.
“Back row Mr Gautier...”
I turned my head. A dark haired girl sat on her own in the back corner of the room, her head turned to the window as she ignored the rest of the class. She wore her hair down and covering her face so I couldn’t see what she looked like.
