*Ash's POV*
I listened intently to the commotion around me. Several voices uttered near me, but only one I recognised distinctively.
“He’s just a human. He probably got lost and stumbled across this place by accident.”
My heart fluttered in my chest with relief. I’d never been happier to hear Kayla’s voice.
My body still remained flopped over someone’s shoulder. Their heavy breath beat against the skin on the back of my neck, sending goose bumps across my shoulders.
I was in trouble. If I was inside the mansion that meant other Shadow Beings were here and, by the sound of it, there were a lot.
Suddenly the voices faded out, the outside world slowly dimming to a chorus of hums.
I felt the familiar presence of Garnet in my mind, her voice an irritated bark in my head.
Ok, care to tell me what the hell you were thinking by coming here?
It was easy to communicate with her through my thoughts. I could feel Garnet’s presence only on the edge of my mind. I just had to choose certain thoughts and then ‘send’ them to her.
I came to see Kayla, next thing I know I’m being knocked out and now I’m dangling off some guy’s shoulder!
She paused a moment. Well you’re in the shit, human, because that’s not just some guy whose shoulder you’re on. It’s the alpha wolf’s body guard.
She practically groaned at my incomprehension.
The alpha werewolf of the wolves that almost turned you into dog food!
My heart dropped to my stomach. Shit!
Panic rose in my thoughts. What the hell am I going to do?
There was no way I could get out of here alive. Shadow Beings hated humans. And werewolves weren’t the friendliest toward them either.
I still remembered what they’d looked like that night Kayla saved me. They were twice the size of regular wolves and twice as strong. It wasn’t just what they looked like, it was their behaviour. They acted like they were part human. Of course they weren’t, but they were people and their personalities radiated through their wolf selves.
The image of the grinning black wolf haunted my memory.
Don’t worry, Garnet soothed. We’re going to get you out of here. Just keep your eyes shut and don’t move.
Following her advice, I let my body go completely limp. I listened intently for the voices.
I clenched my teeth at the sound of the one voice I did not want to hear around Kayla.
“So, runt, seeing as we’re in the Luna manor and you’re the leader, how would you like us to kill this human?”
My jaw clenched in response to the voice of Weird psycho-y magic smoke dude. Man, I really needed to find a shorter name for him.
All of a sudden I was swept up, landing with a thud on my back against the solid floor.
My tongue tasted of blood as I bit down on it to stop myself crying out. I felt the rough nudge of a boot on the side of my head. I did my best to remain motionless.
“Well?” he said again. “How do you want to do it? We can give it over to your leech.”
I heard Garnet’s warning growl.
