Meeting new friends

The summer before junior year a new girl moved to town named Veronica Lodge. She came from New York with a reputation of being a mean and stuck up girl. Everyone was shocked when she befriended Betty who she met one lonely afternoon at Pop's Diner.

The town only had one diner so everyone tended to hang out there. Betty was there alone one hot summer afternoon writing while Archie was at football practice and Jug was doing some mysterious chore for his father. These "chores" were becoming more and more frequent and Betty was beginning to worry about them.

As she sat in her booth sipping her milkshake and writing in her notebook, she heard a sultry voice say hi. Betty looked up and saw the breathtaking brunette standing next to her booth.

"I'm Veronica Lodge. We just moved here and I was told that this was the local hotspot. Maybe I was misinformed?"

Betty laughed and replied "No, you weren't. Usually this is where everyone is and there will be tons of kids here tonight. Everyone is at football practice or cheer tryouts or staying cool at the local movie theatre."

"Cheer tryouts? Why aren't you there?" inquired Veronica. Betty shrugged. She knew that her cousin Cheryl would love to have her on the squad but she never felt confident enough to try out.

"I'm not pretty enough. My name's Betty by the way."

Veronica looked shocked and said "You are a knock out. Who says that you aren't pretty?"

Betty again responded with a shrug and said "No one has ever said it to my face but no one ever asks me out or to the dances. I usually have to go with one of my friends."

Veronica shook her head and said "No this won't do at all. I want to be a cheerleader and I want my new best friend to be on the squad with me. When do these tryouts start?"

"In a half of an hour, in the school gym. I don't have work out clothes and besides we won't make it in time." Betty replied. Veronica picked up her phone and called her driver. She told him to get two sets of workout clothes and two pairs of gym shoes and to pick them up at Pop's. A dark limo pulled up 10 minutes later.

"Come on Betty. We can change in the car." Veronica commanded. Betty got up, laughing and followed her friend out the door. She decided that she needed someone like Veronica in her life. Someone who would push her out of her comfort zone and support her.

When they reached the school Cheryl was overjoyed to see her cousin but suspicious of the new comer. She taught the large group of cheerleader hopefuls the routine and asked them to practice it in pairs. Each pair would perform it and be judged to see if they could reach the high bar that she set for all the kids in the squad. Veronica and Betty paired off and started practicing.

Cheryl walked by and said, "Betty, you know that you don't have to try out."

Veronica stood in front of Betty, misunderstanding and believing that Cheryl was saying that Betty wouldn't make the cut. "How dare you insult Betty. She's a wonderful dancer and a beautiful girl. She has every right to make the team."

Cheryl laughed and called to Betty, "Call your body guard off. I wasn't insulting her. I was telling her that she has a spot on this team no matter what. I know that she's an great dancer, who do you think she went to all those years of dance class with?"

Betty rushed to get between them and explain. "Veronica, this is Cheryl my cousin. Cheryl, this is my new friend Veronica,"

"Oh, sorry" V responded while Cheryl smiled and said, "Don't apologize. Anyone who stands up for Betty is a friend to me."

The truth was, Cheryl always worried about Betty. She seemed to have such low self worth and it had been a hard life with her dad. Luckily, her aunt had finally seen the error of her ways and divorced that abusive man. Cheryl was the only one of Bettys friends that knew that her father used to hit her and Cheryl was the one who would clean her up and hid her at her house until the fighting blew over.

Betty was the only friend that knew that Cheryl was into girls and supported and encouraged her to live her life openly and free. Cheryl hoped that Betty would see how wonderful she truly was. Betty thanked Cheryl but said that she wanted to try out so that it would be fair to everyone. Cheryl agreed and walked away impressed with Bettys new friend and smirking over how gorgeous she was when she was angry.
