My alarm went off a few hours later. I quickly reached over C to shut off my phone. 6 am uggg... I want to get to the garage by 7:30 so I can help Sam open. This summer, I was working at the garage at least four days a week but Sam said that he wanted me to switch to my school year schedule a few weeks ago.

When I asked him why, he said "Because I want you to have some fun this summer before you go back to school." I rolled my eyes but I knew that there was no arguing with him. Sam is the auto shop owner so what he says, goes. He's a Serpent whose lived his whole life on the Southside. He's 29 and just got engaged to his long time gf, Kitty.

I tried to hop over Jug but he grabbed me and pulled me on top of him. I giggled

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"I have work, remember? You're meeting me later" I said.

He grinned and said "I remember. How could I forget?"

"I gotta go get ready" I said. He groaned but let me go. I grabbed some work clothes and headed to the bathroom. After I showered, dressed and brushed my teeth, I put my hair up and was ready to go. I wore overalls and t shirt which is my typical work uniform. I headed back into the bedroom and quietly packed for my date. V and C were sleeping peacefully and I kissed them both on the foreheads. Jug wasn't in the room when I came back so I figured that he went to the room he was supposed to be sharing with Arch.

I slung my bag over shoulder and walked downstairs to the kitchen to grab something to eat. I walked in and smiled.

Jug was at the stove, when he heard me come in he said "There's some juice in the fridge and a couple of glasses on the counter. Can you pour us some, please? I making pancakes."

I sighed and said "That sounds great but I've got to go. I want to be there by 7:30. It takes 45 minutes to walk so I'll just make it."

He turned with two plates of pancakes and smiled "It only takes 10 minutes to drive so you still have a half an hour. I was planning on taking you anyway."

I shrugged, "You don't have to"

"No, but I want to. Besides I want to see Sam and I need to check in with my Dad at the Worm" The Whtye Worm was the Serpent bar that doubled as their clubhouse. I smiled, poured the juice, and sat down at the island counter.

The pancakes were delicious and I said as much. Jug looked pleased and ducked his head. We chatted while we ate about Sam and the Serpents and Jug's dad.

"I always wanted to ask" I said as we cleared the dishes and loaded the dishwasher,

"Did your dad make Sam give me a job?"

Jug chuckled, "I wondered that too so I asked my dad. He told me that he made Sam a bet. He told Sam that he had to hire you and let you work for a month. At the end of the month he could fire you but if he wanted to keep you, he had to stand up in the middle of the Worm and admit that you are a better mechanic than he is."

"He didn't!" I said, laughing.

"Oh yes he did. He not only said it but evidently drank too much later that night and forgot that he had done it so he did it again. From then on whenever a Serpent saw you at the garage, he would pull them aside and tell them that you had the same protections that any Serpent family member has. In our gang, you are his sister and no one can harm you." Jug said as we headed out the door.

"Wow" I said teary eyed, "I had no idea". I was touched. After putting on our helmets, we climbed on the bike and were off. We made it to the garage a few minutes early.

Jug and I hopped off and went inside the office.

"Sam?" I called out.

"Where you been, Cooper?" he said as he walked out of the backroom.
