"J," Myree's calm voice whispered into my ear, "You really have to stop staring at the new girl, you'll creep her out."
No, I wanted to yell at Myree, at this whole damned planet, I will not stop staring. She isn't the new girl, the Leaders only want you to think that. She's not Myope, her name is Cassandra. Cass. My Cass.
But instead I stayed silent and let Myree pull me to our next lesson.
I watched helplessly as someone walked off with Cass, their arms linked and massive smiles plastered on their stupid faces (Not Cass's, her face is beautiful).During free period, I stayed in my room, alone.
I did this most days after the trip to Terra. It's the only way to stop me from killing someone for calling Cass that stupid name that the Leaders gave her, 'Myope'.
I stayed there until our next lesson. Another lesson with straight 'Myope'."Come on, J," Myree tried to persuade me, "if you come to dinner with me and the gang then it'll give you something else to think about and then maybe you'll stop staring at Myope."
That was how I ended up in Allit's Terran Restaurant. Which was where 'Myope' and this guy from the gym decided to have their first date. Great. At Allit's, everyone was laughing and talking and smiling.
Except me.
Everyone was having a great time.
Except me.
Myree was on her tenth shot of whatever, someone else had downed about five whole bottles of wine, someone else had ordered too much food.
I, however, kept finding myself looking over at Cass and Rizx at their table in the far corner. Rizx kept on feeding Cass canapés. Cass kept on laughing that wonderful laugh.
It was going well for them and horribly for me.
Then, there was a muffled bang and crash. It happened again but louder. People began to scream. The screaming, crashing and banging got louder and louder, closer and closer.
Soon, I was on the floor with glass and shrapnel all around me.
The screaming suddenly stopped and a figure emerged out of the debris.
My eyes widened in fear and I quickly scrambled away in a random direction.
Soon enough, the screams filled the air again but every now and again they were silenced with a swooshing and a thud.
I kept on shuffling away until I managed to shuffle into someone. That someone turned out to be Cass. Lucky me.
I pulled Cass up with me and began to drag her towards a cupboard to hide in while this murdering weirdo was still about.
But Cass wouldn't move. She kept on shaking her head and mouthing something about not leaving someone behind.
"Cass," I said firmly, "we have to go. Otherwise we'll both get killed as well as everyone else out there."
She nodded to say that she understood, but she still wouldn't move.
"Come on," I repeated frustratedly, "do you want to die so young? Or do you want to live to see another day?"
Cass bit her lip in contemplation before nodding and running with me to the closest cupboard. It was dark in the cupboard. And cramped. And slightly awkward.
Footsteps thudded past the door more than once and blood-curdling screams filled the heavy air.
More than once the footsteps stopped outside the door and Cass and I froze in silent fear of being found.
We stayed there for Arra knows how long. The screams had stopped a while ago, but the footsteps were still out there.
Sometimes we heard voices and snippets of conversations made by the low voiced owners of the heavy footsteps.
"- find it soon or he'll-"
"-We need to kill it before it leaves this planet-"
"-fuck me, this job is harder than Boss said. She's-" "It's an it, Dave."
It soon became apparent that the they were looking for someone or something that was on our planet.
What would they want to kill? What was new to this planet?
I thought for a moment before slowly looking next to me.
It was Cass.
They wanted to kill Cass.
