"They're all men"
Lisa sat up in her bed in a panic, "what?" she grumbled in confusion. "They're all men" Sunmi repeated as she stood at the side of the bed peering over at her sire, "I followed that guy from the carpark and he seems to be the leader of some clan but all the members are men and there isn't many of them from what I can tell, certainly not as big as ours". The Thai rubbed her eyes, "they must be new, nobody saw you did they?". Sunmi shook her head, "nope no one ".
The blonde lay back down and closed her eyes, pulling the blanket over her, "good, tell Dara later she'll no doubt want to know about any rising clans. Now the sun is up so get some sleep". The dark haired vampire was too tired and lazy to go to her own room so just climbed and rolled over her sire, choosing to rest next to her in the large bed, which Lisa didn't mind.
It was a gloomy afternoon in the small town, the sky was grey and rain battered against every window. Gloomier still for a young Australian woman who sat at a table beside a hospital bed, leaning against her hand as she drifted in and out of sleep, getting none the night before. "You should go home and get some rest Chaeyoung" Tiffany said as she walked in holding coffees, "I'll call you when Jennie wakes up". The Aussie looked up at her boss through exhausted heavy eyes as she smiled and graciously took one of the cups, "thank you unnie but I have to stay here with Jen, I feel responsible". "How so?" the elder woman asked as she sat the other side of the bed. Rosé took a sip of her coffee and brushed her hair back with her hand, "I should have gone with her, I knew it was a trap but I went with the guy anyway. I did the wrong thing".
"You both did" Tiffany responded with disappointment in her voice, "you were under orders to hunt with me last night. You should have taken a statement from the guy and kept him with you until I arrived. Please explain yourself". Rosé played with her hair nervously, all the criticism had been on Jennie for the past few months but she wasn't perfect either, "at first he seemed in genuine distress and in our defence, he was. A vampire called RM had murdered his father and threatened to kill him too. We believed a vampire was on the loose and wanted to deal with it, we are slayers after all". "Being a slayer doesn't excuse stupidity Chaeyoung" the elder replied shortly. "All slayers swear an oath to protect innocent people from demons, that's what we were trying to do" the Australian defended.
Tiffany sighed deeply, "slayer oaths are important but they aren't black and white, they are open to reasonable interpretation", she leaned forward and stroked the unconscious Jennie's face gently, "do you know how old I am?". Rosé shook her head, "out of fear of possibly offending you I'd rather not guess". Tiffany smiled, "I'm 32, already much older than the average slayer life span. I solo-slayed my first vampire on my first ever mission when I was 16, I came from a class of 17 slayers. I am the only one of them still alive today". "I'm sorry" Chaeyoung replied sadly. "Me too" said the elder slayer.
Tiffany slipped her fingers underneath Jennie's motionless palm and softly held the girl's hand, "I've had friends like Jennie and I've had friends like you, they're all dead. I know I can be a hard-ass but that's because I am sick of seeing young women throw their lives away. We all heard the stories about Jennie's mom and other slayers who lost their lives protecting innocents. When we were taught about Jen's mother in class everyone thought she was so brave and heroic, except for me. I thought she was stupid". The younger woman's eyes widened in surprise. Tiffany nodded, "of course it isn't something I'd ever say to Jen but when I heard that story I just thought she was an idiot, and selfish too I mean she had a daughter for Christ sakes. Chaeng you'll save a lot more people if you keep yourself alive, dying young is exactly what the vampires want. They want us to rush into things, that's why they use innocents against us, hoping we will put them above ourselves and die for them".
