Richard was an emotional mess. It has been five years since George, his George, left him in that hallway, then ran away from home. He knew that it was his fault that George was gone and it made him sad.
The sadness inside him grew as the years went by, leading him to drink his problems away. Each day he would wake up still in the bar, or next to some girl, both situations accompanied by a throbbing headache.
This fifth year has been the worst though. John and Paul were getting married and John made Richard be his best man. He knew that the role given was for pity, but he took it anyway to make them feel better.
Their wedding is in two months. He didn't want to wait two months. He wanted to get it over with now. But he couldn't do that to the happy couple, so he'll wait. Wait until they're long gone on their honeymoon, where they can't walk in and stop him from continuing, like all those other countless times before.
(Now a little in Paul's POV.)
Paul was fully aware of what happened to his friend after George had "run away". The eternal saddened state, the drinking, the other things, everything. He wish that he could tell Richard what had really happened, but he promised George that he wouldn't.
The things that he has seen Richard do to himself though, the things that he says to himself, the things that he blames himself for.... he just wishes that he could know. Paul hopes that George accepts the wedding invitation, sees Richard, and goes to him. The only gift that he truly wants at his wedding is for Richard and George to get together, and have a family with their daughter Rachel. All he can do now is hope for the best.
