Detective Danny Reagan rolled over in bed, his hand hitting cold sheets. He sighed and barely opened his eyes, remembering when his late wife slept beside him. He remembered everything about her: the warm vanilla cream scented shampoo and conditioner she used, the sweet smell of her perfume, her contagious smile and laugh. The way she kissed him always set his heart on fire. He remembered how he was the only one who could pull her out of the darkness, who could make her feel better about herself.
Danny closed his eyes, willing himself not to cry. His wife was his everything, his love and his life. He could never imagine a life without her, but here he was, lying in bed, cursing whatever made the helicopter malfunction. Cursing that his wife was on that helicopter.
Danny remembered the night before the crash so clearly. He had been having a rotten day, and his wife had completely changed his mood. All she did was smile, hug him, kiss him, then made love to him, reminding him she loved him no matter what, and she wouldn't stop loving him, come hell or high water.
The detective couldn't stop thinking the fatal helicopter crash was all his fault, after all, his wife did change shifts for him. He shook all the bad thoughts out of his head and headed towards the shower. It was about an hour before he had to get up, but he knew he'd have nightmare after nightmare if he fell asleep again.
Danny sighed as the cold water rained over his tense body. The fact that he and his wife had taken thousands showers together didn't help his mood. Once his body was completely numb from the cold water, he got ready for his day. He texted his youngest son to tell him he was leaving for work.
Danny started his car and drove into the city. He didn't have to go to work, he just had to get away from the house. Everything in the house reminded him of his wife. She was the nicest, kindest, most caring person he knew, and now she was dead, never to be loved by her husband ever again.
Danny angrily wiped away the tears he had been holding back. He didn't know where he was going, he just had to get some fresh air somewhere that didn't remind him of his wife.
