I'm certain it has only been a few minutes since I fell asleep, but soon enough someone is nudging me awake. I blink blearily to see Sakura's red eyes staring down at me.
"I'm afraid I'm going to fall asleep if I'm alone any longer," Sakura tells me quietly.
I look up to the sky and realize in surprise that Sakura has taken well over half of my designated shift as well as her own full shift for watch-duty. In fact, I doubt there is more than an hour until the sun will rise again.
"Did you really stay up all night?" I ask in surprise.
"You could have woken me up, you know."
"I'm used to pulling all-nighters for school—this was nothing. Besides, I know you needed to rest." Sakura tells me flatly.
"It's just hard to stay awake when I don't have something to occupy myself with."
I nod as I sit up off the hard ground. Luckily, the nights aren't that cold at this time of year, so my legs aren't as stiff as they could have been.
That being said, the morning air is full of moisture, and I was lucky to have slept on the dirt rather than the dew-covered grass.
I stand up slowly and stretch my arms and back. I was very lucky to have gotten those precious hours of sleep.
It is a common strategy to hunt during the night, and I bet many teams just narrowly avoided discovering me and my team.
I yawn tiredly as I look at the treetops above us. Birds whistle and chirp shrilly in the dewy morning.
I turn to Sakura, "How are the other two faring?"
I glance behind her to see that both boys are still deep in slumber. My stomach rumbles hungrily, and I turn to Sakura with a sheepish smile.
"Good idea." She agrees with a smile, although I haven't even formed any true words.
"If you find anything, please bring some back. Oh! And be certain not to walk anywhere there is a leaf. I was very busy last night." She says vaguely, motioning for me to go ahead and scavenge some food.
Not quite sure of what she means, but taking her word of advice, I head out slowly towards the bushes where I thought I saw some berries earlier.
Ramen and Dango sound very good no, however, I wouldn't dare start a fire...and there seems to be a shortage of Noodles and Rice in this forest.
We'll have to suit for berries for now. Hmm...
I learned a trick once for determining whether or not a berry is edible, but I'll try to find other sources of food too just in case.
I don't make it very far before a squirrel hops onto my path.
Sure, I'm hungry, but I don't have the time, energy, or means to be eating a squirrel for breakfast. Not to mention, this squirrel seems to be missing a large chunk of fur off his back; some other creature must be trying to eat him, too.
Not worth the effort.
To my surprise, the squirrel seems panicked as it races towards me. As the rodent gets closer, I notice that it's not missing fur off it's back, but there is a piece of paper tied around its abdomen.
