One Eye Open

I wake up to the sound of you,
Singing a song to the highest tune.
I look out toward the morning sun,
Close my eyes yet squint with one.

I notice your smile, shining like rain
The morning of a hot summer day;
A smile so bright—so full of life!
It causes me to smile: sharp as a knife.

Singing along to a beat in your head;
I could have slept, but got up instead.
You laugh, I smile; you smile, I laugh:
A smile so pure, I knew it would last.

"A couple minutes—to finish my dream?"
I was dreaming of you, dancing with me,
In the middle of summer,
On the edge of a stream,
And the stream went forever—
Or so it seemed.

Though every stream does curve and bend,
We'll ride each curve until the end;
But in this dream, there is no ending;
No matter the bend, you're worth defending.

"Yes, you can. I'll go make breakfast."
So I close my eyes and rest,
But my ears stay up and listen
To you, as you sang in the distance.
'Cause how could I dream with you in my life?
No dream is better than you as my wife.
