Drive

44 17 36

We just drove. . . .

I had so much on my mind—
It would be impossible to smile,
But you
Got me to.
It didn't take much,
Just a twinkle from your pearls,
And I was head-up-in-the-stars
With you.

The black curtain dripped,
Like paint
Over the light blue sky.
We sat and watched it dry,
And the pink sky
Below
Gave us enough time
To see the stars sparkle
And the moon shine.

I traced the outline of the moon
With my eyes,
And,
In the background
I hear you sing—
Till suddenly you soar
Into laughter,
Like the plane I see
soaring across the sky.

The moon is crescent
—But if you look long enough
You can see the rest.
It reminded me of us:
Enough light to make both of us shine.
Then again,
You shine at night
The same way you shine during the day,
Like a tree
That glows white against the night sky.
—A willow tree,
I think they're called.
Though,
Willow
Sounds so sad—which
Isn't you tonight,
'Cause I can sense your smile,
As you dance to songs
I
Never heard of. . .
But I want to hear them,
Again-and-again
So I'm always reminded of you.

The moon disappears behind the clouds,
So I focus my attention on you:
Your dimples—
Flawless and true—
Make the same shape
As the bright side
Of the moon.

You dance to radio songs,
But,
I don't hear the music.
I'm too caught up in you:
Your hair floats as
Slow...
As the clouds behind me.

You catch me
Out of the twinkle of your eye,
And you hold me
In
Your view.
Till it gives you giggles
And brings me to tears.

I've never felt so happy;
Not once!
In all of my years.
You ask me,
"Why are you crying?"
I say,
"Same reason you're laughing."
Then
We both smile—
For what feels like forever,
And,
I
Turn back
To look at
The bright side
Of
The moon.
