"You know I really like you right?"
I smiled at AJ's flirtatious voice through the phone and watched as he licked his lips when he finished speaking. It was honestly such a turn on.
"Oh really?" I asked, playfully rolling my eyes.
Since both AJ and I were suspended while everyone else was in school, we had been spending a lot of time together and if we weren't together, we were on the phone.
I was glad that he was finally coming around. At times, things almost seemed as if they were too good to be true.
Things never usually went my way, so for me to be this close to being with the guy of my high school dreams was still unrealistic to me.
"Why are you even still?" AJ laughed in the camera, revealing his beautiful smile. He didn't smile often, so it was something I enjoyed seeing.
"Because you won't let me hang up" I playfully snapped back, causing us both to laugh. "I should be going to sleep though. We both should; we go back to school tomorrow."
Today was the last day of our suspension and I can't say that I didn't enjoy it. Even though school was almost over, it was nice to have this little break from it.
"You're right. Goodnight kiddo. Love you." My heart sunk with the completion of his last two words, though they seemed to come out so effortlessly. It was the first time he'd ever said this to me.
"You what?" I asked, still trying to process what he had just said.
"I—I guess I just said that I love you" he responded, obviously taken aback by what he said also. "Y—you don't have to say it back if you're not ready.
"It's just that in the midst of trying to get the virgin boy to have sex with me, I actually started to like you and ya having sex didn't help to combat those feelings. I didn't accept it at the time because what did the pretty boy that everyone wanted look like falling for the almost high school graduate virgin...no offense." He let out a small chuckle.
"I didn't even really like Kyle. I kept him around because, well, he had a car. He'd let me use it whenever I wanted so why not keep him close. After seeing you with someone else, I was reminded of those feelings and it actually upset me to see you with someone else.
"During this suspension, I realized that I really do care for you and those feelings grew with each day."
I was left speechless. I couldn't tell if he was just sweet talking me or if all of this was genuine, but being the naive teen I was, I of course absorbed each one of his words like I was a dry sponge.
The line went silent for a bit before AJ spoke up again.
"I'm going to give you some time to think about it. Goodnight again."
"Goodnight." There was a long pause before I finally said "I love you too."

The next day. AJ and I made our way to school together. He called an Uber from his house and had it stop at my house before going to school.
The car ride was surprisingly less awkward than I'd expected it to be. Our exchange of words the night before had actually made things more comfortable between us and it seemed as if I learned more about him as a person each day.
Behind that pretty boy player persona that he always showed, there was a sweetheart, a gentleman who was very affectionate and had feelings. Who would've thought?
As we entered the school building, all eyes were on us. I couldn't tell if it was from the incident that had happened Monday, or if it was because AJ's arm rested nonchalantly around my neck, but either way, I didn't care.
