I spent the remainder of the day thinking about Omar and his new appearance.
I had been unconsciously getting through my day with the entire scenario still playing in my mind.
Before I knew it, the final bell had rung.
I had gone the duration of the school day without running into AJ and Omar surprisingly, even going as far as skipping lunch and hiding out in one of the stairwells to make sure that happened.
One would think that I'd want to see AJ, but after seeing Omar, I felt that I'd be reminded of it which was something I was trying to avoid.
I threw my hood on my head, thank god I had worn a hoodie today, and pulled the strings tightly so that my face would barely be exposed.
I hurried to my locker, grabbing what I needed and replacing it with what I didn't before slamming it shut and making my way toward the school's exit with my head to the ground.
As I walked toward the door, I felt a hard bump on my shoulder, causing me to drop everything that was in my hands.
"What the fuck!" I screamed out in frustration, only to look up and be greeted by a smirking Kyle. I didn't have the time, nor the energy to deal with him, especially considering the circumstances and what I had done to him just days prior.
I gathered everything that had fallen out of my hands and continued making my way to the door even before completely getting up.
I heard a few people call my name on the way through the parking lot, but I ignored them and continued to speed walk in the direction of my house.
On top of me needing my after school nap now more than ever, I wanted to clear my head and what better place to do that than in the comfort of my own room.
As I got closer and closer to my house, I couldn't help but get the feeling that someone was following me.
I brushed it off and pulled out my phone to play some music to make the rest of the walk to my house go faster.
Ironically, the clouds above me were growing grayer, making this feel like a scene straight out of a scary movie. The walk home for me was never this long, but today, things seemed to be moving exceptionally slow.
As I crossed the final street to get to my block, a car swerved in front of me, almost hitting me. The windows were tinted, so I couldn't see who was behind the wheel.
Feelings of fear and irritation spread throughout my body as I quickly made my way around the back of the car, speeding up my walking pace to my front door.
"What's good shawty" AJ's familiar voice called out. A feeling of déjà vu came over. I was also feeling relieved that it wasn't some random stranger trying to rob me or worse.
"Hey, sorry I've been ignoring your texts all day. The weirdest thing happened to me today" I responded, approaching the passenger door of the car.
His head was down as I reached for the car door.
"So why did Oma—"
One could only imagine the shock on my face when he lifted his head and I saw that it was actually Omar.
"OMAR!? WHAT THE FUCK!"
I honestly had no words. That fear that had washed over me just a few minutes returned and I found myself backing away from the car door.
Was Omar really startling to sound and look that much like AJ or was I just becoming delusional?
"Jalen, why won't you just talk to me. Can't you see? I'm everything you've ever wanted."
"Omar, you're sick!" I felt tears dripping down my face as I continued to back away and run toward my house.
Eventually, I had turned around and was full sprinting for my front door. I heard a car door slam and footsteps making their way behind me.
Omar was a lot faster than I was and I knew that. My breathing grew heavy as I put everything I had into running. I could see my house clearly, but it seemed to be a never ending journey getting there.
I made my way up to my front door, only to realize that I had neglected to take out my keys.
I quickly removed my bag from my shoulders, opening it and immediately scrummaging through it for the key. It was times like this when I wished I were more organized.
By this time, I had already reached my front door, still frantically searching for the key. After what felt like forever, I eventually found the key, struggling to unlock the door.
Once I had opened the door and practically flew inside, I stopped, realizing that I hadn't been touched yet. Between the speed that Omar was running and the amount of time it took me to get into the house, he should have been caught me.
I looked around and there was no sign of him. I hadn't even realized that the sound of him running stopped.
I looked to where his car had pulled in front of me and it was no longer there. That was weird considering that I didn't remember hearing the car pull off.
Maybe I had been so caught up in running that I hadn't even realized the sound tires screeching away, but my block was a fairly quiet one, so I was bound to hear something.
I sat at my front door, a little more than confused trying to figure out what was really happening.
Did Omar manage to make a clean escape and I was so caught up in trying to get away that I hadn't even realized that he'd stopped chasing me?
Was I so tired from school and having thought about what I saw earlier that I was really just hallucinating and imagined the whole thing?
Was I just delusional?
I sunk my chin into my chest, letting out a loud sigh before closing the door behind me.
My feet dragged as I headed toward to stairs to go to my room. As if all at once, I was suddenly feeling exhausted. Maybe I was just tired and imagining things.
As my first foot hit the step, there was a knock on the door. I contemplated answering it, not even because of what had happened, but simply because I was tired.
I decided against it and lazily made my way back over to the door to open it. I looked through the peephole, but whoever it was was covering it.
"Who is it?" I called out, hoping I'd get a response.
"It's me, open the door." The voice sounded like it belonged to AJ, but after my little episode earlier, I couldn't be too sure.
"One second!" I yelled, already making my way to the kitchen to grab a knife.
I crept back toward the front door, pressing my ear up against it to see if I could hear anything. Silence.
I slowly reached for the knob, twisting it, and then pulling it wide open and pointing the knife at the person behind the door.
"Woah, relax kiddo." AJ said, throwing his hands up in surrender. "You're the one who's been ignoring me all day. I should have the knife."
I let out a nervous chuckle, feeling both relieved and nervous that it was actually him.
I'm back!!! Sorry for the hiatus, but this summer was just all over the place. I'm happy to say I will be once again updating this story regularly and I hope to finish it within the next 2-3 months, if that. Enjoy and be expecting more updates soon.
