The Commitment: Darker Than Envy

chapter 1

(Seven) Arabian Carter

I woke up with an arm on my neck and loud snoring in my ear. I rolled over to check my phone to see what time it was.

5:10 am

in bold white number I've been waking up the same ever day to make breakfast and get my siblings ready for school. I got up off the pallet I share with my younger sister and brothers. I walked into the tiny bathroom in our room washed up and brush my teeth and got dressed for school in just simply black sweat suit

I walked out into the living room that reeked of alcohol and cigarettes

Mom must be home

I watched my step all the way to the kitchen stepping over broken glass, bent needles, and cigarette butts

Must've been one heck of a party

I took a look in the refrigerator and sigh in disappointment See nearly nothing

Note to self find the food stamp card and pick up something to last till tomorrow.

I checked the drawers and found something to cook for the kids for breakfast. I took the food to the counter to start cooking.

While the food was cooking I went to go get my little twin sister and brother King and Kannari clothes out for school. I got their things ready for a shower when they wake up. With everything being done I went and fixed their plates. I woke them up and got them to all clean before breakfast

"Mmch" Keiko smacked his lips "oatmeal and toast again I swear im so tired of it" he said playing in the oatmeal

"Well that's all we had."I responded

"Can't we have sum else for today?" he asked

"Do you have something else money?" I asked already knowing the answer

" I can't get no job" he said

"Then eat up" Kannari said

Keiko was the second oldest, 13 to be exact he was always spoiled when we had money so getting a job was never an option for him.

"Don'tchu get paid today" he asked

"She hasn't been to work yet smart aleck." Kannari said

Kanni is only five but will talk like a 45 year women with nothing but time; whereas King will just pretend like you aren't even there. Sometime I wonder how are they even related let alone twins

"So?" Keiko said
"Sooo she has to pick up her check and cash it before she can spend it. Duh, come on now I'm 5 and even I know that

"I wasn't even talking to you" he said

"Get ready for school" I said shutting that argument down before it even got started. I continued sweeping the living room floor as they grabbed the bags I had lined up beside the door

"What about you? you skipping school today" he asked

"No I don't have a first period so I'mma get the house clean up and take the twins to school after" I said

As Keiko walked out of the room I continued to clean until I had the livingroom spotless

6:36am

"Keiko your bus is out here" I said

"Alrighty see y'all after practice ig" he said heading out the door. after the house was clean I dropped the twins off at daycare

My school is just a 15 minute walk from there.

It was cold as crap in Chicago. The doors were closed to the day care.
