Hazel's POV
I exchanged a worried glance with Piper. Monica was fidgeting under her cloak and her eyes were darting around the courtyard. Her hair was falling in front of blue eyes, which were cloudy and distant.
"Monica?" asked Will worriedly. "Are you okay?" she tilted her head from side to side in a meh motion.
"Come with me." she whispered softly, leading us away from the rest of the group."Hey! Where are you guys going?" asked Divani turning away from their conversation.
"We'll be back in a sec!" said Monica putting on a cheery facade, but then dropping it the instant she turned away. I frowned."Monica, what's going on?" she just shook her head, and leaded us into a corner away from everyone. It was secluded, just a little space behind a classroom. The great lake had been blocked from view, and it had vines growing over the walls.
"Geez. " muttered Nico looking around at the desolated stone. "It looks like no-one's been here for ages." We nodded in agreement. Monica took a deep breath, and exhaled shakily. Nico looked at her concerned.
"Si tratta del pacchetto?" I looked at him confused. What did he say? Don't get me wrong, it made me super happy Nico could speak Italian to someone, but it was not useful when I couldn't understand what he was saying. Monica nodded, and his face fell.
"I knew something was off about that." he mumbled, and turned to Will. "It's the package." he said, making the blonds eyes widen."Oh!" his eyes narrowed. "That makes a lot of sense."
"Uh, what package?" said Piper looking at the two. "Am I missing something here?""Monica got this package at breakfast that she kinda hid from us." explained Will. "I knew there was something wrong with it!" he smiled.
"It's nothing to smile about!" said the italian girl forcefully. We all fell silent. Monica was usually so calm and collected, this was the first time we'd seen her lose it.
"Sorry." she said noticing our silence, curling in on herself.
"You have nothing to be sorry for." said Will sofly. She smiled, and looked back at us."Okay, so our family moved away from Italy because we were cursed." she started. "I'm not sure who did it, but someone had got hold of one of our heirlooms, and managed to fix something inside it."
"Are you sure you don't know who cast the curse?" I asked her, watching her body language. She was shivering despite the warm air, and she shook her head. I doubted she was telling the truth. I looked eyes with Will, who gave his head a little shake. I turned back to her. Since Apollo blessed Will, he'd been able to tell when people were lying. It didn't work all of the time, but apparently Monica was lying. She knew."Anyway, the heirloom has been considered something to be ashamed of, and my grandfather is the one who takes care of it. The longer he took care of it, the more irritated he became." she locked eyes with the boys. "That's why I was so nervous to see Bella earlier. She's my grandfathers owl."
"As you may have noticed, the package was a jewelry box." she said nervously. "Inside it was a locket." she reached under her cloak, her hands trembling. "This locket."
The locket was a tarnished copper color, with a odd symbol engraved on the front. It hung on a thin metal chain, which had a miniscule latch and the back. The minute she took it out, I knew there was something wrong with it. It just gave off an aura of nastiness, and I fought the urge to edge away.
Noticing our reactions to the object, Monica hurriedly tucked it back under her cloak.
"See?" she asked hoarsely. "There's something wrong with it. I-" her voice faltered as a few students passed by. They threw us a glance, but said nothing. "I don't know what to do about it." she whispered. I looked at her. Monica was refusing to look at us, staring at her shoes instead. Her hands were no longer shaking, she'd crossed them in front of her chest instead. Nico smiled.
"Don't worry. We'll think of something. But what do you want us to do anyway?"
"Nothing." she said quietly. "This thing has been in my family for a while now... and I'm not sure we can get rid of it." she looked back up at us. "But I might have to skip class and stuff to... to look after it. I know it sounds stupid-" she added hastily. "But I'm not sure what the curse does, and..." she trailed off, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. Will have her a soft smile. "Don't worry. We'll cover for you." she nodded her thanks, and left without another word. As soon as she was out of hearing distance Will turned to us and frowned.
"Was it just me, or did that thing give off a creepy vibe?" I looked at him confused.
"What is a vibe?" Nico chuckled.
"He means a creepy feeling."
"Oh!" I nodded. "It wasn't just you.""Actually," said Piper slowly, "It kind of reminded me of a horcrux." Nico nodded.
"It felt like something at dad's palace. There's this cell where dad keeps souls that keep escaping, and that locket definitely gave off the same aura as that place." he said fiddling with his ring."What if we're wrong?" asked Will carefully. "We can't just accuse her of carrying around a piece of you-know-who's soul, it doesn't make sense! Also, if we have to destroy the locket... It's been in her family for a while."
"Yeah." said Piper smiling. I looked at her grinning. I knew that look."Got an idea Pipes?" she smiled back at me.
"Monica is a smart person, who uses really advanced vocab. Why would she say a while? She definitely knows better words to describe how long it's been in her family. Also, what if the object was only cursed recently? It would make sense, even though the locket looks old, it could have been a relatively young object, but the strain of the curse could have made it look old. That would explain why-" Nico cut her off."As interesting as your theory is, we have to discuss it later. Entrance hall?" he said his gaze darting to me. I nodded. I'd gotten better at shadow travel, seeing as Hades had given us lessons and stuff. Will smiled.
"Okay. See you guys in fourth period. We've got Transfiguration together." Piper smiled.
"This should be interesting."
