A six year old girl's POV
I dodged the people at my way, sometimes hitting their hands and knees. Yet, I kept running however fast my small legs could go, I was being left behind again.
"Hey!" I shouted at my playmates as we ran through the streets. I laughed as I almost fall on my face, luckily I kept my balance.
I slowly progressed to a stop when I coudn't catch sight of them anymore. Kids the same age, almost the same height, wearing colorful clothes. I looked back.
Maybe I'm ahead.
But there were no signs of them. I stamped my feet upon the concrete, getting frustrated.
I hope these adults would shut up and stop moving. I can't concentrate because of them.
Okay. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I focused on hearing their laughter and high pitched giggles. Only grumbles and heavy footsteps I heard from the infuriating grown ups. I huffed in annoyance.
I gave up and aimlessly walked along with the crowd. I clutched my rubber ball in my arms. It's my ball we're going to use but boohoo for them, they left me and they're left with none.
Then a person bumped me in the shoulder, making me let go of the ball and it bounced away from me. I chased it.
The ball stopped when a man blocked its way with his foot. He looked at it then at me.
Strong posture, clean haircut, wearing a military jacket and boots. He seemed a rather nice person with morals.
He picked up the ball as I walked closer to him.
"Is this yours?" He asks, I nodded. He handed over my ball to me. I stretched my arm reluctantly and when I grabbed my ball, tucking it in my arms. I looked around as I saw at the corner of my eye that his focus was on me.
"Are you lost?" He finally asked. I looked back at him and saw concern written in his face.
"Uhm..." Should I tell him the truth? He's a stranger. He seems kind but could I trust him? "Yes," I shyly answered. He knelt down so we became eye level to each other. Sucks to be small.
"Where are your parents?"
"I-I don't have any parents."
He tilted his head a bit then clicked his tongue as he thinks what to do.
Please don't kidnap me. I hate being talkative.
"Where do you live then?"
"St. Christina's Orphanage. Not that far from Lauriston Gardens," I answered straight.
"We could ask questions on the way." He paused. "Do you want me to guide you home, by the way?"
Part of me says "let's ditch the orphanage, it's boring there" then another says "go home. you're going to die if you leave the orphanage"
"Yes please..." I mumbled.
The man smiled at me then stood up. "Let's go then. We'll ask questions if we don't know the way or you can't recall it."
I nodded at him and absentmindedly held his hand. I held tightly into it because I was afraid I would get lost again if I don't have anything to hold on to. I felt safe holding his big hand, it's like I'm holding the hand of a superhero.
There's still a bit of me hoping he was not a kidnapper. I heard they do really cruel things to kids.
"What's your name?" He asked me.
"Lillian," I answered.
"Pretty name." He smiled down at me.
"Thank you."
"I'm John by the way. Dr. John Watson."
"Nice to meet you then Dr. Watson."
So he's a doctor then. No lie in his voice. But he looked like a soldier based on what he's wearing and his body posture. Maybe he's a soldier doctor. That's an awesome job.
We reached the orphanage by nightfall with the help of a bakery man and Mr. Police Officer. By then, I settled in his strong arms after realizing I took a long way far from home.
Sister Marge quickly opened the door when the man knocked on the door three seconds ago. A smile appears on her face when she sees me. She hugs me.
"Oh thank you for bringing dear Lillian back. We started worrying when she hasn't come back for dinner," Sister Marge blurts out.
It made me roll my eyes at her lie. I didn't miss you too, Sister Marge.
"You're welcome. We got kind of lost on the way," Dr. Watson said.
"How could we ever repay you Mr...?"
"Watson. Dr. Watson." He smiles. I'm guessing he's a smiley person.
"Thank you Dr. Watson. May God bless you." Marge looked at me. "What do you say, Lillian?"
"Thank you for bringing me back, Dr. Watson. You're my hero." I smiled at him.
"It's no problem. It's been my job to help people at all." He left with a goodbye and me and Sister Marge went inside the orphanage so I can have my dinner.
I ate my food while she was bickering at me how I always go far even though they told me so many times that I shouldn't. It's not my fault this place is boring. I would rather be at the moon than here.
She even told me that if I do that again I will do all of the chores of my housemates. Not fair, you can't do that to a child!
Anyway, I washed my plate and went to bed like she told me to.
This day was fun. I would totally kill to go that far away again.
The next week, I stayed near home. I played at the park and guess who's there? My annoying housemates. I wish there was someone like me. Sadly, I'm that unique.
But then I saw Dr. Watson there.
"Dr. Watson! Hi!" I would greet him.
"Hello Lillian. How are you?"
"Fine." I sat beside him and sometimes we would talk for hours until it was time for me to go home.
There was one time, I got into a fight. Childish fight. They pushed to the ground because I don't wanna play with them. I got a scratch on my face and Dr. Watson treated it with his gentle hands.
He's really awesome. I want to be a doctor like him when I grow up.
The week ended and I didn't see him on the bench where we usually talked. I felt sad. He was the closest thing I have to a father.
He didn't show up anymore and that made me go back to interact to kids my age. I was brought back to the world of dolls and doodling scribbles on paper with crayons.
I just hope he's alright whatever war he's fighting.
