—Friday, two fifteen in the afternoon, and I was just starting to wake up out of my sleep.
Amina was already up. She was unapologetically enjoying some pancakes. I just rolled my eyes and rolled over.
I guess she sensed that I was awake because she began to speak to me.
"Look baby girl, I know you're enjoying that mattress and the peace and quiet in this place, but you need to get up. Kennedy's vigil is today, and our building opens back up tonight."
I look over my shoulder at Amina. Partially in confusion and partially in disbelief.
"They're opening our dorm building?" I question, turning around and sitting up straight.
"Yes. 'All buildings will be fully accessible by 5 pm tonight.'" She quoted articulately.
"It's already been a week?" I question Amina nods.
I... do not... want to go back to that campus. To that building.... that room...
Not only will the memories flood back, but it just won't be the same! The gap is too big to fill. Thinking about going back to our dorm building made me feel the lingering presence of death in the pit of my stomach.
I can't.
Returning to that building is too much for me, let alone entering that dorm!
"Are you..going?" I question, readjusting to face her.
"Mmhmm! It hurts to say but, living with the girls is not as much fun as I thought it'd be. I miss my stiff bed and my little refrigerator." She admits.
I simply nod.
"Are you —"
"I don't think I can do it. I'll just stay with the girls..." I reply.
"Well...It's almost three. We need to go print Kennedy's vigil cards and get ready." Amina explains, reaching out for my hand.
I grab her hand and allow her to lead me to the bathroom.
"I'll be downstairs waiting for our Uber. Hurry up and meet me down there once you're done." Amina comments from behind the door before leaving the suite.
...
Amina and I went to Staples to go print and pick up Kennedy's vigil service/thank you cards. While we were waiting at the printing kiosk, I heard someone call for Amina.
It was Sierra.
"Sierra!" Amina said cheerfully, going over to give Sierra a hug.
They were far away enough for me to leave without Sierra noticing, but I decided to reveal myself to her, instead of leaving. I had nowhere to go anyways.
"Who is that— Nickeya?" Sierra said surprised, hugging me hella tight.
"What's wrong with you!" She snaps, releasing me from her hold.
