1821.
For the first time in over his 126 years of existence, he had set his eyes on something so beautiful. His lips hung open slightly as he looked at her carefully, dark eyes watching her every move, breath and action.
He had seen beautiful humans, yes, but none could compare to her, the dark beauty over a 100 feet away from him.
She was picking the cotton dutifully, her full attention on it, not even noticing his nearly terrifying gaze.
Jaebum leaned against the tree, his right leg crossed in front of the left as he strangled the animal without looking at it.
With eyes still on her, he brought the dead carcass up to his lips, planted his fangs on its neck and began to feed.
"Anna! Come help me put this basket on my head!" An older woman called out and his beauty turned in reply.
So that was her name.
It was such a basic name but it had a sweet twang to it.
"Anna." Jaebum allowed the name to roll off the tip of his tongue.
He would see her again.
No, he had to see her again.
He must.
"There better be a lot of wandering animals here." He muttered walking home.
There had to be a lot of wandering animals in that spot if he wanted to keep watching his Anna.
1835
A nine year old child sauntered into the woods as she chased a brightly colored butterfly. Her mother didn't notice her wandering away, she was too occupied picking cotton as usual to pay attention to the child.
Anna tried so desperately to love the child, even though she was a child of the wickedness that had been done to her nine years ago.
The cool breeze blew and the mocha colored child's hair moved in the direction that it blowed.
"Where did it go?" The little girl thought looking around.
Jaebum stood by his usual tree, attention focused on Anna's daughter.
The child he tried so much not to hate.
She was not at fault.
Her rapist father was.
He still hates himself for not coming just a few minutes earlier to stop it from happening.
After a few years of just watching Anna from underneath his tree, he began to walk around stealthily at night to check on her, sometimes placing a soft kiss on her forehead as she slept.
On that particular day, he had come to watch her sleep as usual but she wasn't in her cabin, and his hunger had gotten the best of him, so he decided to get a quick meal first, before coming back to search for her.
"I should have never left." Jaebum says as the little girl sits on the floor and pets a rabbit.
He came back 20 minutes later and saw Anna in her cabin crying and shaking, while surrounded by three women, so he transformed to a bat and watched from the window.
