Silenced by the Night

She's in love with him

Silence filled the atmosphere. Nathan was reading the newspaper. Someone knocked on the door breaking the silence. My room became loud because of the knock.

“El, can we talk?”

“It’s Melody, can you go outside whilst we are talking”

He nodded and opened the door before going out the room and running downstairs.

“What are we talking about?”

She locked the door and sat down on my bed.

“We’re talking about Nathan. He’s a huge bad influence for you. So, please just stay away from him”

“Bad influence? He ran out the group. He doesn’t even join anyone’s trouble anymore. Melody, can you just tell me what you want me to do with him?”

“Just stay away from”

“Why am I staying away from him? I don’t even know the reason why”

“Just stay away. He’s mine. He’s not yours”

That was what she wanted? We were best friends. She can’t make the two of us not see each other. I was having nightmares whilst he was in a three weeks family reunion. I know she was a great friend to all of us. Even to Nathan. But she wouldn’t be in love with him after I did fall for him as well.

“Look sister, your first dance might be from him. But he’s coming with me”

“We met you last year. You don’t know him too much”

“Whatever. Just let him go. He’s mine”

“I will not”

I opened the door letting Nathan inside so she can go out of my room in thirty seconds.

“Go out of my room now!”

Nathan gave me a confused look before actually closing the door.

“What did the two of you talk about?”

“It was nothing. You don’t have to be worried”

If I told him, he would ignore me so Melody and I could talk to each other. This is what happened to me and Caylah, except without him ignoring me. Nate was smarter than me; he knows what to do with friendship problems than I do. He had tons of friends before I could even meet him. 

“I’m more worried if you don’t tell me”

Should I tell him? Of course stupid, he’s your best friend why wouldn’t you tell him.

“Melody and I had a fight. Don’t ask what it is about”

“What is it about?”

Well, answer him. He can’t stay clueless about yours and Melody’s fight.

“About a boy, we were fighting about a boy. Melody and I have the same crush in school and mostly she wants me to stay away from him”

“Why wouldn’t you stay away from him?”

“OK, if you want me to”

He gave me a small smile before going back to the newspaper. Why would I ignore him for Melody? We were both best friends and promised each other not to pick a fight.

“Forget about that ignore-the-boy-you-have-a-crush-on thing”

“Why? You said it was alright”

“You want me to ignore you?”

There was another confuse look pasted on his face. 

“She has a crush on me?”

“Isn’t it obvious?”

Paige was doing her homework in my room. Caylah was reading the mails that were suppose to be for Caroline.

“Look at this. She got an invitation to a black tie”

I pulled the invitation from her and read through the fancy writing.

“It’s in Melody’s house for her fourteenth birthday party. And it says for all the family members to come. But I’m not coming”

“What’s up with you and Melody?”

They both had a confuse look on their faces.

“We had a fight”

“What did you fight about?”

I remained quiet for a minute whilst I was thinking of maybe a lie to tell them about our fight. But every lie I come up was being covered by the truth.

“Nathan”

“She also wants to be friends with Nathan?”

“No Paige. She’s in love with Nathan”

The room echoed with gasps.

“You’re serious? The both of you are fighting about a guy?”

“Yes we are. There you know the reason why I do not wanna talk to Melody”

Caylah picked up a small note from her pocket and read it out loud.

“Caylah, I have more things to tell you than anyone. But I want you to do something. Make Nathan hate Ellie or make Ellie hate him. Just tell him or her that everything they say to each other is a lie. Everything and I mean everything. I wanna make sure when I come back there Ellie’s all by herself and she already hates Nathan. Melody”

“That was what she wanted? Nathan and Ellie hating each other”

I pulled the paper from her and read the letter again.

“P.S please do it quick. I cannot wait any longer”

There was a negative feeling inside me. I really needed to make Melody learn a lesson. Well, this taught me a lesson. Not to be friends with a girl you just met in a vacation whilst you are friends with a boy that you met at your age of eleven.

“She said ‘please do it quick’. Cay, are you really doing this?”

She shook her head and threw the piece of paper out the window.

“I’m not doing a favor from her. She does it on her own. But I am not making these two lovey-dovey couple hate each other”

“We’re not a couple. And please remain quiet”

Caylah continued reading the mail and Paige went back to doing her homework. It was really awkward why these two girls loved being in my room. I really do love their company and I like it when they’re in my room

But since when did Melody fall for him? Why would she make us hate each other?
