Caroline stood there straightly, watching me blink, breath and smile sharply. It was a waste of time; I couldn’t have run away with Paige and Caylah by this time. We had a lot of time to run away even when Caroline is asleep. Both of them wanted to run away, too, but if we did. When they find the three of us, we’re dead.
“Start packing, this gun is ready for fire”
“Fire it. Right down my skull”
Her hand was trembling until she let go of the gun and sat back down.
“Please, just start packing before I lose control and shot you with Nathan”
Love–love controlled her. If love wasn’t made, I wouldn’t have been sent to the hospital by this minute. I climbed up the stairs and into my room bursting into tears. I took out my phone and texted Nathan, telling him that he needed to go. My tears were stinging; I took out my bags from under my bed and packed up my clothes. The door was locked, so it was impossible for anyone to come inside. My phone vibrated from the nightstand, a text from Nathan saying:
‘I already am; been home for ten minutes. Hope to Caroline will let you see me again’
We have the same thought; I remembered when he had a family reunion years ago. I was so depressed; I started having nightmares about not seeing him anymore – Wait a minute. My nightmare – It was about me being taken away to another family, we both were hiding from Caroline until one day we were caught. But this was different; I had to leave without telling him that I am. It would totally crush him. My phone rang from the nightstand; it was an incoming call from Nathan.
“Hey Nate”
I wiped off my tears with the handkerchief Jessica gave me and put it down on the pillow.
“Hey why did you tell me that I needed to go?”
Should I really tell him? I felt awkward standing there with nothing to say. If I tell him more of the things Caroline did five minutes ago, he’ll take me with him.
“It was too dangerous”
My voice was trembling as I said the words. I shouldn’t have done that, it was a sign that I was nervous.
“Your voice is trembling, tell me the truth”
“OK. Just don’t try to do anything about it, I’m being sent away in the morning”
I felt like he was crying, my stomach was twisting and my body was aching.
“Why?”
His voice sounded like he was already crying.
“Why are you being sent away, And where?
“Both your questions, I don’t know. But you can’t do anything about it. If you do – I don’t know what she’s gonna do Nathan”
I hung up without saying another word. It felt like I didn’t wanna talk to him before I leave.
Thalia wasn’t answering my calls, neither even Melody. I haven’t talked to any of my friends for days. The family, Caroline was sending me to, canceled the adoption, and so did she. Still I wasn’t aloud to see Nathan. My room was changed, it was beside Paige’s. She’s making sure I don’t let anyone in; the window was pretty easy to climb on to. Someone tapped on my window making me let go of the envelope.
“Nathan, what are you doing here?”
“I’m visiting. With Thalia and Melody, Jessica too”
“OK, just make sure they remain quiet. You don’t want me being sent away”
Melody jumped on my bed and Jessica did the same, her thirteen year old face was different. Her blonde hair had waves instead of ringlets. I still remembered when Nathan and I were watching over Jessica, they were all moments. None of those moments might be able to happen again, but they all are playing over and over again in my mind. We never have a chance to turn back the time but they will do it themselves.
“So, how are you my big sister?”
“Jessica, what are you talking about?”
“Nothing”
She walked towards Nathan and pinched his arm.
“Ouch. I’ll do that to you later”
Nathan locked the door and sat down on my bed. The three of them gave the two of us a strange look.
“When have the two of you been dating? Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Mel, we’re not dating. Still, just friends”
“Oh. Are you just friends?”
“Dude, c’mon just kiss her”
My eyes were frozen on his cool green ones. It was another eye-contact, usually he hates making eye-contact with any of us. Not even to Jessica.
“OK. You young couple, Nathan and the three of us need a hiding place because Caroline is going up the stairs in twenty-five seconds”
“The closet”
The door opened after I shut the closet door. I felt weird while I closed it; on the corner of my eyes was an uncomfortable and unbearable sight.
“Thank you for finally following the rules”
She slammed the door behind her. I opened the door letting all of them out. Nathan was the first one to go out holding his neck and faking to be suffocated.
“Nate, really funny”
Nighttime was the hardest part; the single bed by the window wasn’t there anymore. Someone tapped on my window making me stand up in surprise. I looked over the window and saw Nathan. I opened the window to let him go inside.
“Nate, it’s the middle of the night. What are you doing?”
“I’m sneaking in my best friend’s room. C’mon, I’m taking you somewhere we’ll remember. A once in a life time experience”
“Don’t say once in a lifetime”
I grabbed my hoodie and went out the window. The cold breeze hit me as I walked down the ladder he put up by my window; a motorcycle was parked on the side of the house.
“What happened to your car?”
“It’s my mum’s now; she bought me a motorcycle instead”
He handed me a helmet before he got on and put on his.
“Nate, I don’t think it’s safe”
“You can do it”
“What?”
“Trust me”
