Nathan was running around the backyard chasing Caylah and Paige. This is the reason why. Whilst Nathan was taking a shower they replaced his shampoo with theirs. Now Nathan’s hair smells like apple and mango; I kind’a like the scent of those fruits. It’s a bit humiliating if you continue running and you don’t notice that you are gonna run into a pool.
“Caylah, Paige, someone’s here for you”
They stopped running as they got in the kitchen and closed the door.
“Are you tired from chasing them?”
“No. Not even a bit”
“You know, I kind’a like the new scent of your hair”
“You’re kidding? I hate it”
We stayed quiet for a minute until we heard an argument inside. I ran inside and peeked in the living room.
“No Melody. You are not gonna go in Ellie’s room”
Paige pushed her to sit down on the couch and sat her still.
“I tell you this Melody. You are not taking a single step in Nathan’s or our house. If you do, it’s not gonna be good for you”
“What are you gonna do? Threaten me again?”
“You don’t need to be threatened. You already are a threat”
She stood up and walked closer to Caylah. She whispered something in her ear before walking out the living room and out the house slamming one of the double-doors behind her.
“Caylah what did she tell you?”
I went in the living room and looked at Caylah and Paige.
“I don’t wanna believe her but this is too crazy to be true”
“What’s too crazy to be true?”
Nathan crashed on the couch whilst looking at Caylah. She turned to him and back to me.
“She said Nathan went to their house last night”
I turned to Nathan who was looking at Caylah confusedly or something like that.
“Did you Nate? Did you really go to their house last night?”
“Nathan, just tell her!”
Paige looked at me with worry in her eyes and went back to staring at Nathan.
“I’ll give you time to think about a lie on where you were last night when I rang your house and Jessica answered that you were out at a friend’s house”
I ran to my room slamming the door behind me and locking the two huge locks on them.
“Ellie, Ellie, alright I went to their house last night. I just told her to stay away from you so you wouldn’t be bothered about her being staring at me in the cafeteria. What are you even feeling, jealousy?”
Jealousy, maybe it was that feeling. Maybe it was the reason why I started hating Melody. I opened the door so I can tell him in and we could talk through things.
“P.S Jealousy isn’t hatred. It’s love. You hate seeing the one you love being with someone else because you’re afraid they are gonna take them away. It’s corny I know. But I learned it from Jessica”
“You learned something from your little sister?”
“I did. Look, I know you didn’t really like the idea of me going to Melody’s house”
“I really do. So, can you just not go there anymore?”
He nodded and closed the door.
“Promise”
I walked closer to him and formed a smile.
“You wouldn’t break that promise would you?”
He shook his head and held my hand tightly. A song played in my mind, it’s about a guy that's in love with a girl, but the girl has been scarred by her past heartbreaks. Even though she loves him, too, she's afraid of letting him in and him taking advantage of her. But he would never even think about doing that to her, so he tries to tell her that he'll always be hers, and that he's not like any other. That he will never leave her heartbroken, that he'll fill the vacancy and never leave it empty again.
“What are you thinking?”
“A song; try to write it down, I have a few lyrics on my mind”
“Go on”
He grabbed a notebook and a pencil on my drawer and looked at me.
“This ain’t the heartbreak hotel… Even though I know it well… those no shows, they sure tell… In the way you hold yourself… don’t you fret, should you get another cancelation? Give me a chance I’ll make a permanent reservation”
“What would we call it?”
“Heart Vacancy”
Nathan or Jessica both weren’t tame. But why is it so long for them to go out of their house? We all had a small talk and told each other to actually walk to the beach with Mariah.
“Nate, Jess, if you don’t go out right now I’m gonna break entrance”
“Alright, we’ll be outside”
The door opened revealing Jessica and Nathan.
“Where’s Mariah?”
Mariah approached her and smiled. It was quite cute seeing them do this.
I was sitting on the sand whilst watching Mariah and Jessica pick out some shells they were gonna put in their collection. And Nathan was writing down some lyrics on the notebook that I gave him so he can work on much more of the song than just a chorus or maybe an intro.
“Nate, are you done with the song?”
“Not yet. I haven’t written a single letter”
“Ellie, Nathan, we found something”
I stood up and approached the both of them. Nathan was already in front of me.
“What is it?”
“These are perfect. We found these bracelets and Jess and I think they’re perfect for the both of you; a best friend bracelet?”
“Maybe, shall you put it on for us Jess”
She tied the bracelet on my wrist and tied the other one on Nathan’s. The bracelet was made of shells and gems tied together. It was an amazing design on my wrist, somehow if Melody sees this in school. Oh. I am so dead.
Jessica was already eleven, I remembered the time she kept bugging me about reading her the story ‘The Red Shoes’.
We were friends falling for the same guy. Does this normally happen to me and Melody when we’re in love with the same guy?
