There were books scattered on Nathan’s bedroom floor. It wasn’t really messy; they were just at the foot of his bed. Nate was the smart one in our friendship. Caylah was acting lady-like and a bit childish but smart. Paige was all lady-like; she never did a single thing that was childish. Of course, she’s seventeen; she can’t act like a three year old.
“Ellie, what do you think I’ll wear? Mariah keeps telling me to wear the black, if you vote for it you can tell me”
Jessica entered the room holding two of her blouses.
“It’s blue; they make your eyes pop”
“Thanks”
She walked out the room closing the door softly behind her. I wonder where she’s going. My phone rang in my pocket after several seconds of silence; it was an incoming call from Paige.
“Hey Paige, what are you up to?”
“Nothing, just get home already and get prepared”
“Why am I going home again? Nathan told me to wait for him”
“Just get home. Nate knows what we’re doing. There’s a special event coming along”
“What event? Paige… Hello… Paige”
I put my phone back in my pocket and looked at the bathroom door.
“Nate, I’m going home. Paige said something about a special event”
“Yeah, we talked about that last night. I’ll see you in an hour”
I walked out the room and down the stairs where I saw Mariah and Jessica fighting about the mirror. I went out the house and walked the last block to ours
There was a man’s voice playing in my head; saying something about emotions. Thalia shook my shoulder making me go out of the trance I was in.
“Hey, the bell’s ringing, aren’t you coming?”
I gave her a smile and walked out the room. Thalia’s a new girl in Abbeydale; we made friends with her after seeing Melody in the park. Nathan was again enrolled back in Ribston Hall, it was gonna be hard whilst he’s gone. But I had Thalia with me.
“Where are you heading next?”
“I maybe go by my house first. I need to check if Nathan even sends me a letter”
“Who’s Nathan again?”
“You’ll meet him soon, I hope”
She gave me a friendly hug and small smile.
“It’s OK. I’m sorry I reminded you of him”
We walked out the school my arm thrown on her shoulder and hers around on mine. She was a real friend; Caylah comes home late because of rehearsal. I was a bit emotional when reading Nathan’s letters or text. My phone vibrated from my pocket, it was something that Nathan might have sent. I opened it and saw a photo of him in his uniform whilst inside the house.
“This is Nathan”
Thalia looked at my phone smiling.
“Wow, he’s hot”
“You think? He isn’t vain but he also thinks he’s gorgeous”
“I really think so. Can I date him?”
“Anything you want”
We continued walking whilst I was staring at Nathan’s picture in my phone. I made it my wallpaper and put it back in my pocket.
“Don’t you even think he’s totally gorgeous?”
“You don’t even know him Thalia”
My phone rang again; it was an incoming call from Nathan.
“Hey Nate”
“El, did you receive my photo?”
“I did. P.S I think my friend’s in love with you”
“If I get to know her I might return the feeling”
There was a ray of jealousy building inside me. Was I jealous when he loves someone else? No. Yes. I was in love with him, but why was my jealousy so strong? Thalia was the greatest person I knew when I enrolled in this school. And she keeps telling me she was happy about her mother’s decision in the new house. You see. Thalia’s parents are divorced, so Thalia and her mom keep moving to different places in the U.K. They also moved to Ireland, she calls it ‘Land of Leprechauns’. I don’t like her nickname, too.
I was on the phone with Nathan. It was also in loudspeaker because Thalia wanted to talk to him. We both wanted to talk to him; he was the only thing I was thinking about the whole day. Every time he has to leave, can’t believe it cuts so deep, it’s like a dagger in my heart. That might be some lyrics used in a song.
“Hi Thalia, Hi Ellie”
“Hi Nathan, how are you? Ellie really misses you right now”
“Oh I miss you, too, El. I’ll come home in summer, I promise”
Tears were forming in my eyes. His voice in the phone was so different from his real voice.
“Ellie, don’t cry. You know I hate it when you cry”
His voice sounded like he was also starting to cry, soon after there were sounds of sniffles.
“Nate, don’t cry. You know I hate it when you cry”
Soon we all were laughing, I missed him so much.
“El, I need to go. It’s already our curfew”
“OK. Bye. Take care”
“Bye El”
I hung up and looked at Thalia. She gave me a hug and sat me down on the couch. This is also what I like about Thalia, she gives the best hugs.
“It’s alright. You’ll see him soon”
My tears were burning; the sting on my skin was more than the fire that burnt my skin. He was just my best friend, why would I cry this hard because of him leaving for high school? It was impossible that I loved him so much that I couldn’t even let him go.
It was like daggers in my heart when I would let him go. I wish we would rise like a phoenix from the flame. But we were best friends but we were like a couple that wasn’t meant to be apart. Why was it this strong?
He knows I never wanted to hurt him. That was how much I was so in love with Nathan. There wasn’t anyone that could replace him; I was so in love with him. Melody might also have been this in love with him. We never actually bumped into her anymore since we’ve been friends with Thalia.
Both of us understood the meaning of her being mean to you when she’s in love. This is what we all have in common, Paige and Caylah loves her. We all had similarities. Three of us trusted her, so this is what we’re lucky about.
When Nathan’s gone it was like a dagger in my heart, does he even know?
