"Be careful, Hon. He's still very unstable right now," the nurse said as she opened the door to Zayn's hospital room.
"I will, thank you," I replied. She gave me a smile that seemed to say, "I'm-so-sorry-dear."
I shut the door behind me, cutting off the bright light of the hallway, leaving a low dim glaze surrounding the room, only to be tamed by one small light in the middle of the ceiling. The room had no other noises except for the heart monitor, which beeped normally, and the slow and steady pit-pat of the rain hitting the roof of the building.
Zayn lay there, broken and pale, on his hospital bed attached to tubes and an odd machine to help him breathe correctly. Tears welled up as I sat steadily at the edge of the bed, making the blanket and sheets produce a small squish sound. Zayn was asleep; I listened to the deep rise and fall of each breath, making me want to die, right there knowing that he may not be the same anymore.
I reached for his arm, carefully tracing his tattoos. I traced the crossed fingers, the zig-zagged line surrounding the cartoon words POW!, all the way to a blank space, in the middle of nowhere. I knew it was where his tattoo of Perrie used to lie, until he had it removed later on after she died.
I looked up to see him awake, and smiling at me with bright eyes, one thing that still makes him look like Zayn right now.
"How are you feeling?" I asked. His reply was a cold and broken, "Okay."
"Okay," I said, setting my purse down beside the bed. Tears started rolling down my cheek as I looked up and saw Zayn sitting up. He wiped away the tear and said quietly, "It's okay, Allison."
"No, it's not. You were shot. It was all my fault. If I would've just stayed with my dad..."
Zayn lifted my chin with his fingers and looked into my eyes.
"This is not your fault, Ally. And besides, if you did stay with him, you wouldn't have met us."
"I know, I know. But sometimes, I just wish I were the least bit normal."
"Honey," I heard a small voice say. The nurse looked at you with sugary eyes as she said, "Visiting hours are over. Go home."
I looked back at Zayn who only nodded, and grabbed my purse, heading out of the door.
I passed the front desk and out the exit before I burst unto a puddle of tears. The tears blinded me as I pulled out of the empty parking lot, along with the rain drops patting on the windshield.
It was a long drive home, before I locked myself up in in apartment, forgetting to call June and Ocean.
