It’s been over a month since the last time I saw Lance and I honestly missed him. I thought that after Lance left things between Chris and I would go back to the way it was but no it got worst. Chris became more distant than ever. We fought more than usual and we spent less and less time together.

My birthday was coming up and Chris has yet to mention it, I really hope he was planning a surprise and he didn’t forget. I knocked on Chris’ door and his roommate Justin answered. “Hey Kendra” he said with a sweet smile, “where you been lately?” I smiled and lied “Hey Justin, school’s been kicking my butt.” He stepped aside to let me in the door “I hear you, but Chris is in his room.” “Thanks” I smiled and walked down the hall to Chris’ room. I knocked and then opened the door “hey babe” he said as I walked over to the bed where he was laying down. “Hi” I said sitting on the edge of the bed. Chris was wearing red basketball shorts and no shirt, the TV was on and I could see the game controller on the bed next to him. “You’ve been playing games all day?” I asked a little upset. He shrugged “practice got canceled” “uh huh.” “What?” he asked looking up at me. “Chris you haven’t called me all day and you’ve just been playing video games!” He sat up and grabbed my arm “I’m sorry babe, I just needed to relax.” “Ok.”

After watching a few movies I sat up “babe what are we doing this weekend?” I had to know what Chris had planned for my birthday. “Umm I have practice Friday and I work Saturday” he said. He worked Saturday? How can he be working on my birthday? “All day?” I asked disappointed already. “Yep. Need the extra money” he said “why did you want to do something?” “No” I said and stood up. “I have to go it’s getting late” I said grabbing my bag from the dresser. “All right babe call me when you get home. I love you” he said and blew me a kiss. I smiled a little and walked out.

I woke up Saturday to a knock on the front door. I threw on the robe that hung on my computer chair and headed downstairs to answer the door. I opened the door and there stood a man in a blue uniform holding the biggest bouquet of flowers I’ve ever seen. “Hi delivery for Kendra” he said. I smiled even wider, I knew Chris wouldn’t forget my birthday “that’s me” I said as I reached for the pen to sign. “Have a good day miss” he said handing me the flowers. “Thanks.”

I walked to the kitchen and placed the flowers on the table, with the biggest grin on my face I opened the card. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEAUTIFUL. YOU DESERVE ALL THIS AND SO MUCH MORE! I MISS YOU AND I HOPE YOU HAVE THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER, TURN UP FOR ME LOL J I LOVE YOU! Ps. I hope calla lilies are still your favorite flowers. LOVE, LANCE.”

I looked at the card again and again, the flowers were from Lance? So Chris did forget my birthday. I walked around to examine the beautifully arranged calla lilies in all sorts of colors it was in the most gorgeous vase. Wow this must be expensive. I sighed, I had two calls to make.

“Hello?” Chris answered groggily. “Um hi” I said waiting for him to say something to stop this anger I felt for him right now. “Damn babe it’s early, are you ok?” “Yeah I’m just calling to see what you’re doing today” I lied. He laughed “Well I planned on sleeping a little longer before getting up for work.” “Well I guess I’ll let you go back to sleep then” I said the anger spilling like venom in my voice. “Ok babe, I’ll call you later.” I hung up without even saying bye.

I dialed Lance’s number next “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” he yelled through the phone and just like that all anger was gone. I laughed “Thanks for the flowers.” “Oh you got them already? Perfect” he said. “They’re perfect and I love them” I said. “Well you’re perfect and I love you so it worked out” I smiled “you haven’t called me in like 2 months Lance.” He sighed “I know and trust me it’s been torture but I’m trying to keep my promise to you.” “Hmm.” “Ken what’s wrong?” “How did you remember it was my birthday and how did you know calla lilies were my favorites?” I asked. “What kind of question is that? I would never forget your birthday and you told me those were your favorite flowers the first time we went to that crab place remember?” I laughed at the memory “Oh my God! That was like two years ago, I’ve never eaten so many crabs in my life.” He laughed “I’ve never seen any girl eat that much in general.” “Shut up” I said trying to control my laughter.

“Chris forgot my birthday” I said when I managed to stop laughing. He was quiet for a moment “maybe he’s trying to surprise you.” I laughed “trust me Lance he forgot” he sighed “I’m sorry Ken. So what are you going to do today then?” “Nothing I guess” I said. “Kendra it’s your birthday go out, call Chris I’m sure he didn’t do it on purpose.” I laughed “wow you’re encouraging me to be with Chris? Who are you?” Now he was the one laughing “I told you I would respect your wishes.” “Doesn’t matter anyway, Chris is working all day” I said. “Go out with your roommates” he said. “I don’t know Lance” I tried to debate. “Kendra shut up and go enjoy your birthday. I’m going to go put some money in your account.” “Wait no!” I protested “you really don’t have to do that.” He laughed “I know I don’t have to but I want to. Girl’s night is on me and I’m not taking no for an answer. Besides I’m already on my way to the bank.” I heard his car start and I shook my head “you’ll always be stubborn huh?” I asked “yep. And you’ll always be my Ken.”

“Thank you Lance, for everything.” I said. “Don’t even worry about it Ken, I told you I always got you. Now go enjoy your birthday.” I laughed and finally agreed “ok fine, I’ll go ask my roommates.” “Good. Call me tomorrow and tell me about it ok?” he asked “Of course. Thanks again Lance.” “Bye Kendra. Happy birthday and I love you sweetheart.” I closed my eyes and listened to his voice in my ears “I love you too Lance, bye.”
