AAHANA'S POV
"She's probably joking my wife" Dad joked looking seriously at me.
"No Dad.I am not joking." I replied to him.
"Do you mean Soham? The boy who accompanied you ?" Mom asked me
" Yes Mom. He's the one" I replied.
"How you do even know him? We have no idea how or where they live, or what kind of business they do. How well do you even know him Aahu? They are richer than us. We can't afford to get married to them. Your father can't meet their demands. Even if they don't demand anything. We can't afford to entertain their high-class guests. It's simply not our cup of tea aahu. You. Can't. Marry. Soham" she gave a long speech making my dad chuckle.
Only me and dad know how well I know him. Although I don't have clarity about why he was in jail but rest I can assure everyone that he's nice one.
"Mom I have known him since school. He's been to our house. Helped dad, and spoke with you too." I said.
"No way. You will marry whomever we decide" she stated.
"So how will you decide for me?" I asked her.
"Families meet and we talk with the guy then we decide" she said.
"So basically what I have done is not valid and what you do is valid, by the way, it's the same mom. You just don't like that I selected someone on my own" I said.
"What if he's not right for you?" my mom asked.
"What if the guy you get me is not right for me?" I questioned her back.
"Both of you calm down. My dear wifey, let's deal with this issue delicately. Our daughter is interested in marrying someone. I am happy about it but we will agree if we feel he's good. OK? OK with you both? " my dad asked us to which we just nodded our heads.
"I want to talk with Aahana alone." with that said my dad moved to his room and I joined him between my mom's sharp glares.
"Soham? They won't even think of people like us child" my dad said sitting on his bed.
"Dad, I went to meet him. He asked me to meet him today and I came home from there. He wants to marry me. He kind of proposed to me, dad." I said smiling at him.
"Aahu, the world is cruel. We just can't trust everything we see" my dad said holding my hand.
"Dad you are saying this? Have you not accompanied his dad for every court trial? Don't you know who might be the real culprit? Even if Soham killed someone, I don't think it's out of rage." I spoke remembering his last trial where his lawyer stated that he had been framed in the murder.
" He was at fault. He killed a person because that evil man took life of his dearest love. He took justice in his hands Aahu. I am not saying he's a criminal. I am worried what if he hurts you because you have done some wrong in future? " he questioned me.
"I have known him since my school days. He didn't change dad. He might be a criminal but only in that minute I assume. Dad no one knows about him and his family better than you. Tell me, do you trust him? Do you trust his family? If you don't want me to marry him. I will tell my decision to him directly " I said looking into his eyes.
"What if he tries to hurt you Aahu?" he asked me.
"Dad, he assured that he will respect my decision no matter what is it. He even said if his stay in jail affects my decision, he's not going to force me or convince me into anything. What else you expect from him dad? " I said placing my head on his shoulder.
" I dont know who is the dearest person Aahu for whom he was in jail. I heard from his dad that person died due to injuries. We can't tell your mom that he's been to jail." dad said making me sigh.
" You mean, you are agreeing to my decision? " I asked him.
"Did you take this decision because somewhere you always had crush on him or was it due to other reasons? " dad questioned me.
" Dad! During school times, everyone had some or the other crush or let's just say it's peer pressure you know, plus many always mentioned about Soham, how good he is and all. My good impression towards him affected my decision not the tiny crush I had on him. If I look at it, imagine dad, me going to see grooms like desperate graduate attending interviews hoping they are selected and suitable for job! I know Soham, you know him too, mom will know him soon. So I think it's best to marry someone whom we can trust rather than sit before a guy who is as bewildered state as I am and think of our future together. " I said making my dad smile.
" You have grown into a intelligent lady. It's your decision Aahu, if you feel he's right then let's go with it" my dad said lying down on his bed and closing his eyes.
This means he needs time to think...
" I will just freshen up dad. Whatever you decide I am OK with it " I said walking back to my room. My mom hurriedly rushed into their room, eager to discuss about my decision with my dad. Although he has said its my decision, I want him to confirm it. He raised me for these many years and it's only fair that I tell him my wish to marry someone I like. If he finds some problem with it, I am sure he will come and talk with me about it.
I know, no one can say no to Soham!
Keeping my fingers crossed I sat near my window looking out on to the street. As I rested my head against it, I fell asleep thinking about Soham and my dads decision.
"Aahu! Get up! Have dinner! Your neck will pain! " mom woke me up gently. As I opened my eyes, I found group of men looking in my direction. As soon as they observed that I saw them, everyone of them got into vehicle and left.
Strange.
