"Hokage-Jiji?" Naruto inquires.
Kakashi had just delivered the mission report and Sasuke had just left. Of course, where he goes, Sakura follows and as such it's just the three of them remaining in the room.
"Yes, Naruto?" Hiruzen frowns. The only times he had been addressed formally was when something was wrong.
Without the usual exuberance radiating from him, Naruto leaves an impression of foreboding, as he speaks the fateful words: "I request a transfer to another team."
Kakashi's head bows in despair, his last chances and hopes of reconnecting with his sensei's legacy utterly crushed as his lone eye tears up.
Seeing this, Hiruzen calmly asks the question: "Why?"
"Well, it's more the team than the mentor," Naruto reaffirms, allowing Kakashi to lift his head with a watery smile and half-hearted chuckle. "Sasuke and Sakura are annoying. Sakura is essentially useless in every way and Sasuke is downright unbearable, from his Uchiha pride to his demands for everyone to pamper him with jutsu."
Flashback:
"Hey, Dobe! Where'd you get the new sword! T'wasn't here yesterday, huh?"
"I claimed it for my own. What's it to you?"
"Give it to me," Sasuke demands, his palm outstretched as he stares expectantly at Naruto, who gazes back with boredom.
"Never will I ever owe Sasuke Uchiha anything," Naruto smirks. By Kami, he is so pretentious.
"Then you shall teach me all of your jutsu!" He grins, repetitively telling himself that his victory is ensured.
Naruto turns his back on him, walking away. He genuinely isn't worth my time. I could be starting on one of that new genjutsu that the voice mentioned. I believe it said, "the blade will guide you"? I've got to try that!
"Where d'you think you're going, loser? I've yet to claim my prize," Sasuke indignantly shouts like a petulant child missing out on some candy as he charges, fist raised.
He blinks, his eyes becoming a scarlet red with circular rings surrounding his pupil with a single tomoe (comma) floating around the pupil as if in orbit.
His fist crashes into Naruto's back, which dissolves into a pool of water. What? Sasuke thinks in confusion as he watches "Naruto" become a puddle of water.
A hazy voice drifts throughout the air in a sudden burst of wind. "If you don't wisen up and prioritise friendship over revenge, you'll never have anything to gain!"
Flashback End.
"This team has no synergy and unless they tank for every shot that comes towards me, it will never work," he spits with a loathing, most unlike anything they had heard from him before.
Hiruzen and Kakashi sigh.
"And I fear that with his Sharingan, he will copy the Uzumaki clan's jutsu. That is unacceptable," Naruto adds to the flame with a firm tone, his motives now clear.
He wishes to protect his clan from a possible threat to its future! Hiruzen realises. I have trained you well.
"Then, in that case, I will transfer you to another team," the Hokage sighs, giving Kakashi a sorrowful look. He flips open a file. "I believe that Team 8 may suffice?"
Naruto contemplates the offer. "Actually, I wish to be pulled off duty for a while," he finally answers, gaining two looks of shock.
"What?" They incredulously exclaim in perfect sync. "Why?"
