I sit underneath the tree, the birds singing above me. The grass below me gently swayed in the breeze, the hot sun making the air warm. I enjoyed the view of children playing on the playground, adults talking and laughing. Edgy teenagers talked under the shade, their parents also watching them.

I knew this park was the happiest place for me, especially away from my lonely apartment. Of course, I lived by myself, by choice. I love my friends, but I'm happier with living by myself and my pet turtle, Terrance. John Laurens let me have one of his many turtles, since his boyfriend, Alex, thought he had too many.

I smiled softly at the memory, looking at the clouds. A different movement made me glance over to see a dark skinned boy, his eyes traveling across the sky as he sat down on the bench, close to the tree I sat at. I haven't seen him around, at all.

I stood up, grabbing the book I had set down earlier, and dusted off my pants. I walked over to the boy, his brown eyes sparking up emotions I couldn't pinpoint as I stood in front of the boy. Silence hovered between us, our brown eyes keeping contact.

"Hi," I spoke softly, my shyness suddenly hitting me like a truck.

"Hello," he said formally.

"Can I sit?" I asked.

He nodded, not speaking another word. I sat down next to the boy, keeping a good distance to not seem weird. I looked down at the book I was reading, wondering if this was a better place to read, other than reading under the tree.

"What book is that?" he asked, his eyes gazing at the book.

I looked at the book once more. "It's called The Hate U Give, do you know it?"

"I've never read it," he said honestly.

I looked at the book again. "Would you like to borrow it?" His eyes seemed to brighten, his hesitance showing. "It's okay, just return it when you see me again. I've read this book many times."

"Thank you," he said, letting me hand the book to him. "How about I return it tomorrow, same place?"

"Sure," I smiled more, watching as he stood up.

"Thank you."

"It's no problem," I stood up as well. "I'm James, by the way."

He hesitated again. "Thomas."

"Beautiful name," I say gently, a pink tinting his cheeks.

He waved goodbye, walking the opposite direction I was going to head. I smiled and waved back, glad to have made a new friend.

"A new book, hm?" I ask, glancing around the library I worked at. "What type of book?"

"A romance," the woman replied, smiling at the thought.

"Over there," I pointed to the isle. "I recommend Sarah Dessen books, she's an amazing author."

"Thank you!" she said excitedly, speeding over to the isle. I laughed silently at her beaming expression.

"Oh, James!" I heard from the entrance.

"Ya' know, Peggy, this is a library," I spoke in a hushed tone. "What's going on, ladies? New book, Angelica?"

The Schuyler Sisters walked over to the desk, where I was sitting. "No, I'm good with my book right now. Only half way through," Angelica replied to me. "Other than that, we came to check on you. I've heard you've been distant from everyone lately. Everything going alright?"
